England Premier League
Wednesday 26th December 2018
Kick off at 3pm GMT
Venue: King Power Stadium
Match Preview:
Here’s the thing; Manchester City were so fantastic last season in reaching 100 points to clinch the Premier League crown in style, and have been so brilliant that this season, that we can deem their recent form as very poor.
For any other team that wouldn’t be the case, for example losing their first league game at home since the beginning of the season, however City have now lost 2 games from their past three, which seems very un Guardiola like. What will the response be when his team travel to Leicester who in turn have just beaten Chelsea?
City’s latest game which ended in a shock 3-2 defeat at home to Crystal Palace does nothing for their position which remains to be in 2nd place but they are now 4 points behind Liverpool, and that is quite significant as the two teams gear up to meet each other at the turn of the year, which could be season defining.
In short then, this game against Leicester is a must win. City have picked up 17 points from 24 away from home, a great record but not great for them and they must go on a run of games now to have any chance of remaining champions.
Whilst Palace were handing out a lesson at City last weekend, Leicester’s achievement almost went under the radar when they went to Stamford Bridge and blew the top 4 wide open by beating Chelsea. It was a simply stunning reaction from The Foxes after they had been knocked out in midweek to Manchester City on penalties in the Carabao Cup quarters. It was also Chelsea’s first loss at home under Maurizio Sarri.
Claude Puel’s team are now in 9th place and another win could see them jump a couple of positions. Form isn’t that great for the team who have won 7 points from the last 15, and at home they lost their last game against Tottenham. However before then they had gone on a 3 game unbeaten streak, the problem is the lack of goals at King Power Stadium just 10 so far this season.
Team News:
Leicester: No new major injuries coming into this game
Manchester City: Fernandinho has a fitness issue and will be assessed ahead of this game. Vincent Kompany could be back for this game after missing out on the Palace match. David Silva is out until the match against Liverpool at the beginning of 2019
Leicester vs Man City Head to Head:
The last time the teams played here was just a couple of weeks ago in the Carabao Cup where the match ended 1-1 but City won on penalties.
Manchester City have won the last 5 meetings over Leicester.
Leicester have beaten Manchester City only once in the past 15 years.
Leicester vs Man City Prediction:
A huge game for City, if they lose again and Liverpool win then a 7 point gap would be quite a Christmas present for The Reds. While City do have the quality to win the game they are still odds on at under 1.50 and don’t represent good value for a team that have lost 66% of their last matches.
Leicester remain inconsistent but together with Jamie Vardy being fit again represent a risk to Guardiola’s men. City should still have enough in the tank to dig deep and get a win it what should be an absorbing match. Note: Sergio Ageuro scored 4 goals in the teams last Premier League meeting.
