Leeds vs Newcastle: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 13th May 2023
Kick off at 12:30pm BST
Venue: Elland Road

Match Preview:

The lunch time kick off is a huge game for both sides who have very different objectives and this has all the Premier League material to be a classic. For Leeds it’s about survival and their defeat against Manchester City coupled with Everton’s victory last weekend means that they have been dumped into the bottom three. Leeds are in 19th place with 30 points, form has been poor with four defeats from their last five and just 1 point won from their last 15. But this is a moment of change for the club who have brought in Sam Allardyce, a master tactician at shoring up defence and keeping his sides up. While Allardyce’s first game in charge did end in defeat, it was away to Manchester City and the final result was close. It was just a 2-1 defeat, indeed Leeds looked more assured and remained a threat on the counter and if Allardyce can change the mindset of the players then maybe they can have a new belief and confidence within their game?

Newcastle’s Champions League qualification hopes were dented as they lost at home to Arsenal last weekend, only their second home defeat of the season. Only three points seperates them from fifth placed Liverpool and we are set to have quite a finish to the season, the Magpies however have a game in hand over the Reds but they will be looking to bounce back to winning ways for this game. Before the loss to the Gunners Newcastle had won 3 games in a row and scored 13 goals. Away from home it’s just 3 defeats from 17 games for the Magpies and only Manchester City have a better defensive record, the clubs last away game finished in a 4-1 victory over Everton.

Team News:

Leeds: Luis Sinisterra, Tyler Roberts and Stuart Dallas look all set to miss the rest of the season. Sinsiterra is the latest injury arrival. Liam Cooper is out for at least a week with a glute injury.

Newcastle: Sean Longstaff looks set to miss out as his foot injury appears to be more serious than first thought. Jamaal Lascelles has been ruled out for the season due to a calf injury.

Leeds vs Newcastle Head to Head:

Last season Newcastle won this fixture 1-0.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture the game finished 0-0.

Leeds have just 1 win from the past six meetings.

The last 3 meetings have seen under 2.5 goals.

Leeds vs Newcastle Prediction:

Newcastle of course will be the favourites and this is a game where they will feel that they need to pick up points from. However we have heard a rallying cry from Sam Allardyce he has told his players they must leave the pitch knowing they haven’t lost, at the very worst a point is needed. Spirits will be high in Leeds camp despite their position and plight because they have a new manager in charge, they will have a new injection of motivation and Allardyce has been very vocal about the teams ambitions and what the players must do. Thus it is tempting to back Leeds but on the "+1 asian handicap" which covers us by winning if the game ends in a draw and getting a refund if Leeds only lose by one goal. Newcastle are a far superior side and if they click this game could be done and dusted by half time however with Leeds at home and the majority of fans getting their first taste of Allardyce in charge we expect to see a party atmosphere even though it will be tense. There were enough good passages of play against Manchester City away from home to suggest that the players of Leeds have reawoken and they may just be able to cause an upset at the weekend, the value is good on them to do so also.

Leeds vs Newcastle Betting Tips:

Asian handicap (+1 Leeds) at 1.77

Half Time Correct Score: 0-0 or 1-0 to Leeds at 3.25 and 7.00

Anytime goalscorer: Jack Harrison at 5.00
