Leeds vs Man City: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 3rd October 2020
Kick off at 5:30pm BST
Venue: Elland Road

Match Preview:

Leeds have had a great and certainly eventful start to their first Premier League campaign in 16 years. They have won 2 of their opening three games and even in their one defeat so far they stuck 3 goals past the champions Liverpool only to lose 4-3.

But Leeds bounced back with wins over Fulham and Sheffield United and Patrick Bamford in particular has brought his form from the Championship to the top tier as the club look to make their mark in the Premier league.

They have played just one home game so far which was the 4-3 victory over Fulham, but this match represents quite a step up. It will be fascinating to see if Leeds can cause Manchester City problems, and they should be able too.

Manchester City beat Burnley 3-0 to advance to the quarter finals of the Carabao Cup where they will play Arsenal. It was a result that was needed given how they had just lost 5-2 at home to Leicester. In order for everyone to move on from that result though City will have to get a win here. Anything less and if Liverpool win, then a gap is already appearing, and the pressure will mount on City almost before the real event has started.

The fact that City are in 13th place isn’t really a mark of their season so far given that they have played a game less but Guardiola would not have been thinking that his side would have already lost in the league. They have also conceded in each game they have played so far this could be music to Leeds’ ears given that their opponents have scored 8 goals already.

Team News:

Leeds: Jack Harrison cannot face his parent club and misses this match. Pablo Hernandez groin injury means he is out until after the October international matches.

Manchester City: An update on Sergio Aguero’s injury means the player will have a delayed return, the club have now pencilled in the end of October. Adrian Bernabe has a leg injury and could be out for some time. Ilkay Gundogan was in isolation for Covid-19, he is due to return but may have a few more days rest. He is 50/50 to feature. Gabriel Jesus is out for at least one month with a muscle injury. Joao Cancelo has a foot injury and is ruled out until after the October internationals and Nicolas Otamendi has joined Benfica.

Leeds vs Man City Head to Head:

The teams have not met each other since the 2013 FA Cup when with Manchester City at home they won 4-0.

The last league meeting to take place at Leeds was back in 2004 when Leeds won 2-1.

Manchester City haven’t beaten Leeds in the league since 2000, however of course the clubs have hardly met in the last 20 years.

Leeds vs Man City Prediction:

Manchester City have the quality to win this game by a large score, but there are a few negatives. The first is that their defence looks quite weak, there is certainly a lack of communication and confidence. Goals in this side will be leaked and they won’t be able to score 5 goals every weekend. The other is the mounting injuries, they have genuinely brilliant players out. Of course they have some superb players fit and ready and they will give Leeds a tough time at the weekend.

As for Leeds they are the underdogs and you get the feeling that they are relishing that. They are expected to lose this game, the only poor result for them would be if they went down by a large score, other than that this game is being seen as a test for them and not much else. Marcelo Bielsa is going to have his side fired up, and we see goals in this game, and that's the market we will focus on.
