Leeds vs Liverpool: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Monday 17th April 2023
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: Elland Road

Match Preview:

The last time Leeds played at home they were dismantled 5-1 by Crystal Palace so there could be trepidation in the air as the club take on Liverpool. Leeds need a win to feel safer as they are currently one of the clubs who could be involved in a relegation battle, at the same time Liverpool have their own problems.

Leeds come into this Monday night game in 16th place with 29 points and they will be relieved that three clubs below them have lost at the weekend and if West Ham have lost to Arsenal on Sunday then Leeds would move into 15th place and by the end of this match week they could be 5 points clear of the bottom three, or two if they lose here. Form has been mixed with 7 points earned from their last 15 but the worry will be whether their recent battering here against Palace affected the players or will they be able to move on from it.

Liverpool were twice behind to league leaders Arsenal last weekend but they fought back to draw 2-2 and even though the Reds are having a poor season by their usual standards sometimes you find that there is life in the old dog yet. However evidently Liverpool have only been at their best at home and away they continue to struggle. From 45 points on the road Jurgen Klopp’s side have picked up just 13 and lost 8 of their games so far. It’s been four games without a win and we would have to go back two months since their last victory which came against Newcastle of all sides, the Magpies only loss at home so far.

Liverpool will have Europe on their minds and whilst finishing in a Champions League place looks over a Europa League finish isn’t. The Reds are 9 points from their objective but have a few games in hand so there is all to play for. Overall form has not been good though with just 2 points earned from their last 12 and they haven’t won a game since smashing Liverpool 7-0 last month.

Team News:

Leeds: Maximilian Wober could be assessed as he has recovered from his hamstring injury and is back in training although he is rated at just 50/50 to make the cut. Tyler Adams and Stuart Dallas remain out long term.

Liverpool: Alisson has a knock but is being tipped to be ready for this game. Naby Keita’s muscle injury could well have ended his season as he’s not expected back for another five weeks.

Leeds vs Liverpool Head to Head:

Last season Liverpool won this game 3-0.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Leeds won 2-1, that was Leeds first win over Liverpool in 13 games.

There is a 70% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Leeds vs Liverpool Prediction:

Liverpool are odds on to win this but they are a decent price, and it is tempting to take Klopp’s side on here at 1.66. True Liverpool have been mostly a nightmare so far in this campaign but they have zero pressure coming into this one. The desire is to play some sort of European football next season but at the same time the board will be resigned to the possibility of no European football. The players then could come into this one much more relaxed and then try to just play their brand of football. They will have to prove this of course but it could be a good reason to back the Reds more to win games from now until the end of the season then to go against them.

Leeds have blown hot and cold lately, there have been improvements but these are nervous times for the side. Home points need to be won but facing Liverpool is still a daunting thing to do and we expect the Reds too have to much on the night and to avenge their defeat earlier in the season.
