Venue: Elland Road
Match Preview:
Not many Leeds fans could have dreamt up the clubs start to the season. Yes at the weekend they narrowly lost to Brighton 1-0 but the club come into this batch of midweek fixtures in 5th place with seven points. When one thinks back to last season this feels like a revelation.
The defeat to Brighton was Leeds first loss of the season and the club will be happy to be back at home. It is here where they last beat Chelsea 3-0 and Jesse Marsh’s side have also beaten Wolves here this season. Goals were lacking in the Leeds team last season and the club will be encouraged to have scored seven goals already, only five clubs have scored more so far.
Everton are in 18th place and no this is not last season, and for now these are worrying times for the Toffees. At the weekend it looked like Frank Lampard’s side were going to pick up three points at tricky Brentford but they conceded near the end of that game and ended up drawing 1-1. The situation with Everton is that they are yet to win a game however they have avoided defeat in their last two games after also drawing with Nottingham Forest. It seems that there may be unrest with Antony Gordon who could leave for Chelsea and some of the newer signings are still blending in. Everton are expected to get stronger and the team gel better but for now they will keep being judged if they finish games without victories. It’s going to be a concern for manager Lampard that despite shifting the defence about and prioritising in that department that the club have conceded in every game so far.
Team News:
Leeds: Patrick Bamford is still only 50/50 to make this game because of his groin injury. Luke Ayling is set to miss out again because of his knee. Liam Cooper has a calf injury but will be assessed. Junior Firpo isn’t expected back until next weekend from a knee injury and Stuart Dallas is out until November with a leg injury.
Everton: Andre Gomes will be assessed but could miss out again due to a muscle injury. Abdoulaye Doucoure is out due to his hamstring and not due back for another two weeks. Dominic Calvert-Lewin is also two weeks away due to his knee injury. Mason Holgate is out for a few weeks due to a knee injury. Yerry Mina is out until October with an ankle injury and Andros Townsend has a knee injury and isn’t back for 4-5 weeks.
Leeds vs Everton Head to Head:
Last season this fixture finished 2-2.
Leeds have won just two of the last ten meetings.
Everton have managed to score 7 goals past Leeds in the last 3 meetings.
Leeds vs Everton Prediction:
Leeds come into this game with more confidence and they seem very happy and relaxed at home. They have been very good this season despite losing their last game and it shouldn’t affect them too much, the camp seems like a happy one. Last season Patrick Bamford was missing for much of the campaign and it really seemed to affect the club but Brenden Aaronson in attacking midfield has been a revelation. Rodrigo is scoring goals up front too which means even in the absence of Bamford yet again it doesn’t matter, there are goals in this team. Granted Leeds may find playing away more difficult this season but you sense the club are relishing being at home.
Everton have a poor overall away record with Lampard in charge and for some reason playing away in the evening has always seemed more difficult, this would be a big result if the Toffees could go away with 3 points. The good news is that Everton have a very good record over Leeds but Brentford scoring last weekend when Everton looked set to win wouldn’t have done anything for the clubs confidence and right now they might be affected by this. It’s difficult to see past a swashbuckling and confidence side like Leeds at home at the same time they will have to dig deep themselves and we should witness a very competitive game.
