England Premier League
Sunday 21st August 2022
Kick off at 2pm BST
Venue: Elland Road
Match Preview:
Leeds will be delighted with how they have started in their 3rd season back in the top flight. Jesse Marsch’s side were almost relegated last season of course, surviving on the final day of the campaign so to already have 4 points from their first two games will be very welcomed.
Leeds beat Wolves at home 2-1 in their first game and followed that up with a 2-2 draw at Southampton. Though it should be noted that Leeds were winning that game 2-0 and well on their way to a victory so the draw would have dampened their day. However they come into this weekend in 6th place and they will take that as they head into their most difficult game of the season so far.
Chelsea have the same record as Leeds and they finished their last game 2-2 also. That was against London rivals Tottenham and for the Blues they thought they had 3 points on the board until conceding a 96th minute equaliser. Thomas Tuchel will not be allowed in the dug out as he was sent off in chaotic scenes with Antonio Conte during their end of game handshake.
The Blues opened their account by beating Everton 1-0 away. They also have been active in the transfer market and the latest story is that they may still be interested in Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo even though that interest seemed to have cooled a few weeks ago. What is very true though is that the club are not shying away from spending money and bringing quality players in.
Team News:
Leeds: Patrick Bamford has a muscle injury but it isn’t expected to be serious and he is being tipped to be fine for this match. Liam Cooper will be assessed for a knock, Joe Gelhardt is struggling with a dead leg and will be assessed. Junior Firpo is set to miss out again with a knock, Luke Ayling is still out with a knee injury. Stuart Dallas is out until November with a leg injury.
Chelsea: Mateo Kovacic is out with a knee injury, N’Golo Kante will be assessed for his recent hamstring injury and is touch and go. Marcos Alonso will be assessed due to a lack of match fitness and remains a doubt.
Leeds vs Chelsea Head to Head:
Last season Chelsea won this fixture 3-0.
It’s been 9 games and almost 20 years since Leeds recorded a win over Chelsea.
Chelsea scored 6 goals past Leeds last season.
Leeds vs Chelsea Prediction:
Chelsea have a strong record over Leeds both home and away in recent years which given the gulf between the clubs in the past two decades shouldn’t be a surprise. Chelsea are looking solid even if they are not being considered as one of the favourites to win the league, they will be a thorn in most teams sides.
Leeds are enjoying their football and Rodrigo has started very well with 3 goals already. We expect Leeds to have opportunities here and they will try and take the game to Chelsea, being at home and this being so early in the season, we don’t expect them to sit back. But at the same time if Chelsea can survive some of the game without possession and play their game we expect the Blues to wrestle this one from Leeds and come through with victory, it could be a close game though, but you look at both teams midfield's and Tuchel’s side have a lot of quality in the middle of the park.
Mason Mount scored in both home and away games last season and we will back him to do so again and very good odds. Chelsea are odds on which may not be ideal for some punters but we think they will justify that on Sunday.
Leeds vs Chelsea Betting Tips:
