England Premier League
Sunday 27th December 2020
Kick off at 12noon GMT
Venue: Elland Road
Match Preview:
There aren’t many teams who win a match 5-2 and then in their next lose 6-2, but this is Leeds in a nutshell under Marcelo Bielsa. A brilliant attacking side with a lot of naivety at the back. In truth Leeds are a brilliant Championship side playing in the Premier League and they play a certain way that should see them have survival this season but live on a knife edge at times.
Leeds were humbled against Manchester United last weekend losing 6-2 and yet they never changed tactics as the goals flew in, and this makes watching Leeds for a neutral very entertaining. Of course Leeds would rather focus on their previous game which took place at home where they beat Newcastle 5-2 and they will be looking for victory and goals when they take on Burnley on Boxing Day.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side come into this match in 14th place with 17 points and form is not great with 3 defeats from their last four and they have conceded 10 goals from their last 3. But Leeds survival may just come down to their home form although they will need to improve as they have just 2 wins at home from seven games.
Burnley have been improving in the last month and are now in 16th place with 13 points. Last weekend they possibly recorded their best win of the season in beating Wolves and they come into this game with no defeats in their last four outings.
Away form is a problem with just 1 victory this season but recent form has been littered with draws and in fact they have only lost once in their last five games. A win would send Burnley ahead of Arsenal if the Gunners lose or draw on Boxing Day.
Team News:
Leeds: Liam Cooper has a knock but is being tipped to be fine for this game. Diego Llorente has had an ongoing muscle injury but is being pencilled in for a return, though will face an assessment. Robin Koch and Jay-Roy Grot are out long term.
Burnley: Dwight McNeil has a groin injury and will face a late test, Matej Vydra has a back problem and will be assessed.
Leeds vs Burnley Head to Head:
The clubs have not met at Elland Road since 2015 when the game finished 1-1.
It’s been 5 games since Leeds beat Burnley in the league.
3 of the last four games has seen both teams to score.
Leeds vs Burnley Prediction:
Leeds will have the majority of the ball and will be focused to get back to winning ways. But conceding six goals in the manner they did may have unsettled some players. But Leeds will not change their style of play and will attack from the first whistle.
Burnley are in very good form and should not be dismissed here and they have a good recent record over Leeds over the past decade, even if they haven’t actually played each other for a couple of years. This should be a very open game with lots of chances for both clubs. The value is with Sean Dyche’s team and perhaps looking at Leeds’ less than impressive home record we should opt for the team in form.
