Fulham vs Southampton: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 31st December 2022
Kick off at 3pm GMT
Venue: Craven Cottage

Match Preview:

Fulham recorded a brilliant victory on Boxing Day as they beat Crystal Palace 3-0 away from home and that ended a 3 game streak with no wins. It was a hugely positive return to football for the Cottagers and now returning home for their last game of the year they will be confident of making it two wins in a row. Aleksandar Mitrovic got on the score sheet once again and he now has 10 goals already and is having a fabulous season, it could well be his goals that keeps Fulham safe this season.

Fulham are in 9th place, have 22 points, and could well move up a couple of places and even past Chelsea with a win here. Home form overall has been decent but recent home form has only witnessed one win in their last five which came against Aston Villa. Their last home game ended in defeat in a 2-1 loss against Manchester United.

Southampton are bottom of the league with 12 points but with it being so close a win here could take them out of the bottom three. But who can see that? The problem with the Saints is that they have lost their last 4 games. On Boxing Day and with a fairly new manager in charge in Nathan Jones Southampton went down 3-1 at home to Brighton and that is not good news. You expect with a manager just in that results will turn in your favour and with this being such a high risk job one has to wonder how long Jones will get in the dug out as the Saints fight for survival.

Even though Southampton are bottom of the league their away form is not the worst and they would rank in 14th place because they have won two games. Still the Saints have also lost 6 from 8 and lost 4 of their last five trips and have only managed to score 5 goals.

Team News:

Fulham: Layvin Kurzawa has a muscle injury but has a good chance to recover and will be assessed. Neeskens Kebano is out long term with an Achilles injury.

Southampton: Juan Larios looks likely to miss out again due to a muscle injury but could be back next week. Valentino Livramento who has been sidelined for months is nearing a return from his knee injury but is likely to just miss out here but could be assessed. Alex McCarthy looks set to miss out with his ankle and Theo Walcott remains a doubt with a calf injury.

Fulham vs Southampton Head to Head:

Fulham vs Southampton Prediction:

We are going to back Fulham to get the win here. Their recent results over Southampton have not been encouraging however the Saints look very poor on the evidence we have and we can’t see them getting much here away from home. Full credit to Fulham who have played good football in general so far this season and have been punching well above their weight. Mitrovic looks dangerous and he should be a real handful for a defence like the Saints.

The value is very good on a home win and this could well be the banker of the weekend at least from a value wise point of view. Southampton may bite back this season but away games are going to be very difficult for them and we can only see one winner here.
