Everton vs Wolves: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Wednesday 19th May 2021
Kick off at 6pm BST
Venue: Goodison Park

Match Preview:

Everton have seen their top four hopes quashed in recent games and now they may not even qualify for the Europa League. The key to the clubs downfall has been their home form, time and again the club have lost games at Goodison Park, it is 9 so far. Whilst everyone can accept that you lose games what has been damning from Everton’s perspective is that performances have been poor especially against clubs who have been struggling themselves this season. This was underlined in Everton’s last home game when, chasing a European position they lost 1-0 to the already relegated Sheffield United who in turn recorded just their 2nd away win of the campaign.

Now Everton will face the unpredictable Wolves and it would be tempting to write this one off as another home loss. As it stands Everton are just outside a European finish, though may qualify for the new UEFA Conference League. The club are in 8th place and 3 points behind a Europa League finish. Arsenal, who were over 10 points behind Everton at one stage are only a point behind and the Toffees have won just one game from their last 4.

Wolves are in 12th place and trail their hosts by 11 points in what has been a standard but disappointing season for the club who have taken some steps backwards. Last weekend came their 15th defeat of the season at the hands of Tottenham. Given the games left it seems that the clubs best finish will now be 12th although Crystal Palace and Southampton could well past them by the end of the season.

On the road Wolves have won just 5 games and lost 8 from 18. Current away form has seen the club win once in their last five and that came against Fulham in a close 1-0 victory.

Team News:

Everton: Joshua King has a knock but will be assessed. Yerry Mina had a muscle injury but is widely expected to return for this game.

Wolves: Daniel Podence is out with a groin injury and that looks like his season is over now. There is a small chance that Raul Jimenez could make this game after his long term head injury, but more realistically he could return for the last game of the season at the weekend.

Everton vs Wolves Head to Head:

Last season this fixture ended 3-2 to Everton.

In the reverse fixture which was actually played earlier this year Everton won 2-1.

The last 5 meetings in a row have all seen over 2.5 goals.

Everton vs Wolves Prediction:

One has to wonder how long this home slump from Everton will actually go on for? Maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel though it is worrying if manager Carlo Ancelotti can’t find solutions to change the mindset at home or perhaps the simple answer is that players are not putting in a shift and there could be a summer of change at the club, we've seen it before.

Proceed with caution but we will back Wolves to continue Everton's miserable home form. It is hard to have much confidence in Everton presently. Though it is obvious if they click and realise the importance of this match they are a team who can win this game.
