Everton vs Wolves: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 13th March 2022
Kick off at 2pm GMT
Venue: Goodison Park

Match Preview:

Everton come into this weekend in 17th place and the only reason they are not in the bottom three is because other teams have been losing games. Leeds just above them are continuing to be poor even with a new manager in charge. Burnley who could send Everton down have lost their last 2 games in 18th place. However if Burnley have won on Saturday then Everton kick off this game in the relegation zone.

Quite frankly (pardon the pun) Everton manager Frank Lampard has not impressed since arriving at the club just over a month ago. Of course there have been bright spots and Everton have made it to the quarter finals of the FA Cup. There was the 3-0 win over Leeds at home but as it turns out a non league side could probably give Leeds a game right now. But the poor away form that has dogged the side long before Lampard joined is still apparent and since taking charge he has overseen defeats against Newcastle, Southampton and Tottenham on the road. The last game against Tottenham was one to quickly forget for Everton fans as they were thrashed 5-0.

But it is at home where most people will feel Everton could get points to stay up this season. Of course the last home game finished in a 1-0 defeat against Manchester City, but how Everton never had a blatant penalty we will never know and the team played well enough to be clapped off and not booed off by the fans. Lampard continues to say the right things in the press but the Toffees really need to start winning games now as the season closes in.

Wolves had to play in midweek and they did brilliantly well to beat Watford 4-0. It was an important win for Bruno Lage’s side as they had lost 3 games in a row and the club has a real chance of finishing in a Europa League place this season which would be a superb achievement for them. Form has not been good for the club but they will only look at their last result and will fancy their chances against an under confident Everton team.

Away from home Wolves have the 4th best record in the league where from a possible 42 points they have won 23. They have won 50% of their games on the road but have lost 5 and that includes their last two.

Team News:

Everton: The good news for the club is that they come into this game with no new injuries. The bad news is that two players who have been out could be missing for longer. Both are thigh injuries and Fabian Delph could be 3-4 weeks away from a return while Yerry Mina is 5-6 weeks away

Wolves: Ki-Jana Hoever was being pencilled in to return for this game but remains a major doubt due to his muscle injury. Nelson Semedo is missing for the next three weeks at least also with a muscle injury

Everton vs Wolves Head to Head:

Last season Everton won this fixture 1-0.

In the reverse fixture earlier in the season Wolves won 2-1.

Since 1979 Everton have only lost once against Wolves when at home although that was a recent result in 2019 when they were defeated 3-1.

There is an 80% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Everton vs Wolves Prediction:

If Tottenham and West Ham drop points this weekend Wolves have a chance to make  a real splash and get themselves back in the mix for a European place and they would go in sixth place. The club remain unpredictable away from home but are a tough unit to beat and will come here with a spring in their step after their victory against Watford.

Everton would go above Leeds with victory but you get a sense that victory here would spell so much more than 3 points and that would be a belief that they can survive this season. To lose this game would seem unthinkable for their current standing but Wolves are a very good team and this will be a match where Lampard’s team will have to dig deep like they did against City at home but also show more in front of goal. The big question now will be can Lampard rally his team and can his team put in a performance at the weekend?
