Everton vs West Ham: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 19th October 2019
Kick off at 12.30pm BST
Venue: Goodison Park

Match Preview:

Everton manager Marco Silva will know all to well what West Ham can achieve because in one of his first games in charge of the club last season the Hammers came to Goodison Park and went away with a 3-1 win. Usually a game against the London team at home has meant 3 points for the Toffeemen so it was all the more disappointing to clearly be second best.

Twelve months on and Silva’s job could be on the line after a terrible start which has seen the club lose 5 games already and move down to 18th place. Everton come into this game on a 4 match losing streak, their latest encounter ending in a 1-0 loss away to Burnley.

True it is early days but the board must be worried and must be thinking of Silva’s replacement. Some reports suggest that the Portuguese manager has 3 more games but what happens if West Ham come here and win by a large score followed by another toothless display by the home side?

Goals have been hard to come by too for the home side who have scored just 6 so far, continue that trend and they will be lucky to score 30 all season. In comparison the champions Manchester City have 27 already. Home form has been 50/50, two wins and two defeats, although the club have lost their last two home games. Losing to Manchester City is acceptable, Sheffield United less so. Everton have a mountain to climb and if anything it will be interesting to see how they tackle Manuel Pellegrini’s side. Perhaps the international break came at the right time for them.

If we're being cynical West Ham could be seen as the gift that keeps on giving. A team capable of beating any side and losing to any side in the league. How else to explain the Hammers who beat Manchester United a few weeks ago and then lost 4-0 to Oxford. True, changes were made, but there was still more than enough international quality on that pitch. For punters West Ham have become a blind bet, and it’s not always easy to know what version we will get from game to game.

The Hammers are 10 places above Everton and have 12 points and considering they are just two points from a European position manager Pellegrini has to be happy with the clubs start to the season. Recent form has been mixed though with just 1 win in their last four, but they have also lost just once in that time too.

The clubs last game was a home defeat to Crystal Palace losing 2-1 and it was a result seen as disappointing given that they were leading 1-0 with less than 30 minutes to go. Away from home they have the 4th best record in the league but it’s not great and says more about the league at present than how great West Ham are doing because even though they are undefeated on their travels thus far, 3 of their four games have ended in draws.

Team News:

Everton: Seamus Coleman is suspended for this game after receiving a 1 match ban following his two yellow cards against Burnley. Fabian Delph has been pencilled in to return for this game after his muscle injury but me may face a late assessment test.

West Ham : Aaron Cresswell picked up a knock in the Hammers last match but has a good chance to be included in the squad. Robert Snodgrass will be assessed after injuring his calf in training with Scotland

Everton vs West Ham Head to Head:

In 14 years West Ham have only beaten Everton twice at Goodison.

There is a 60% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Everton have scored 7 goals against West Ham in the last 3 meetings at home.

Against West Ham at Goodison Park there hasn’t been a 0-0 score line this century.

Everton vs West Ham Prediction:

There shouldn’t be a clear favourite although some may point to the fact that West Ham have simply had a better start than Everton and that there is genuine pressure on Marco Silva. Do the players want him out? If so, traditionally players won’t play as well as they could. At the same time West Ham are a team who have found consistency incredibly hard over the years and when they look up or look like the team to pick up 3 points on paper, they then lose.

Everton need to take something from this game, West Ham are not good travellers, just 1 win on the road this season and are prone to lose against teams that maybe they should be beating given some of the confidence in the squad right now. This is set to be a close game, which could go either way, therefore we will focus on goals selections instead of trying to pick a winner.
