Everton vs Tottenham: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Monday 3rd April 2023
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: Goodison Park

Match Preview:

The last time Everton and Tottenham played each other at Goodison Park Frank Lampard was in charge of Everton and Antonio Conte was managing his first game with Tottenham, neither manager are in their roles now. Antonio Conte left the Londoners during the international break after a series of outbursts and never seemed happy at the club. Tottenham do not have an immediate replacement and instead Cristian Stellini will take over in an interim role.

This is a difficult fixture for Everton but they must push on given that by playing this game they will have played a game more than other teams around them and two more than West Ham. Everton are in 17th after Saturday’s games and they could go back into the relegation zone if West Ham beat Southampton on Sunday. Recent form is key to any team struggling at the present time and the good news is that despite two draws Everton are unbeaten in their last 3 games. The draws have come in both away games against Nottingham Forest and Chelsea and in between the Toffees won just their sixth game of the campaign as they beat Brentford 1-0. Their last game was impressive coming back against Chelsea to draw 2-2 and a win could put the club as high as 13th place.

With regards to Tottenham it has all been about Conte leaving and the club will have to pick themselves up given that they do not want to blow a top 4 finish. They came into this weekend in 4th place with 49 points but there is a real chance that they could lose that position by the end of the weekend. The biggest worry for Tottenham will be Newcastle who are only 2 points behind them, that may have changed on Sunday as they play Manchester United but even if the Magpies were to lose that game they would still have a game in hand and could still go above them, currently 4th place is not in Tottenham’s hands, and some would think it should be. Certainly in their last game they blew two points after leading bottom club Southampton 3-1 they let the Saints back into the game and it finished 3-3. Away from home Tottenham haven’t picked up a win in over two months, and they have won 19 points from a possible 42.

Team News:

Everton: Dominic Calvert-Lewin remains a major doubt even though he has recovered from injury as he has a lack of match fitness. It is the same situation for Andros Townsend although he is ruled out with no fixed return date.

Tottenham: Richarlison is on course to miss the game due to a muscle injury but hasn’t been completely ruled out. Ben Davies will miss the next 3-4 weeks at least with a hamstring injury. Emerson Royal is out for at least six weeks with a knee injury. Yves Bissouma is missing due to his ankle, Ryan Sessegnon is out for another week at least as he recovers from a hamstring injury and Rodrigo Bentancur is out for the season with a knee injury.

Everton vs Tottenham Head to Head:

Last season this fixture finished 0-0.

Everton have remained unbeaten at home to Tottenham for 4 years.

From the last 10 meetings Everton has just 2 wins.

Everton vs Tottenham Prediction:

Everton have found solid form and their recent comeback away to Chelsea will be a welcome boost for the club. Everton’s home form has not been good enough and they have lost 50% of their games here but that isn’t the case recently and they have 3 wins from their last four, including beating the league leaders and Tottenham’s biggest rival Arsenal.

Stellini’s time at Tottenham has been interesting given that he has already managed the club when Conte had to take time off to have an operation and in that time Stellini oversaw victories against Manchester City, West Ham and Chelsea so he has the know all and experience and should be respected even if his time in management has been as an assistant and he isn’t being completely ruled out to get the job full time. This isn’t the new manager effect but we believe it will be the boost needed to get a positive result for Tottenham, although we expect a close game.
