Everton vs Southampton: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Thursday 9th July 2020
Kick off at 6pm BST
Venue: Goodison Park

Match Preview:

Everton will play Southampton on Thursday night at Goodison Park after travelling back from London where they were defeated by Tottenham. The Toffee’s have struggled against Tottenham in recent years but the overall match wasn't good on the eye and the club will be looking to put that right against the Saints.

Of course the good news for Everton is that they are in no way, shape or form bothered by relegation, with 44 points to their name it is more a case of trying to qualify for Europe this season but that may just be beyond them. At the same time and as manager Carlo Ancelotti has said, a good run in their last 5 games could give them a fighting chance.

The Tottenham game was Everton’s first loss since the restart and otherwise they have been very solid with victories over the likes of Norwich and Leicester, and they will feel happy to return home where they have only lost 3 times this season. A win could take the club up to 10th place.

Southampton stunned everyone in their last game as they beat Manchester City 1-0. It was result that most did not see coming and put the Saints on 43 points. Their form has been good though with 3 wins from four games since the restart and on form they would be in the top 8.

Ralph Hassenhutl’s side actually have the 5th best away record in the league where they have impressively won 50% of their games. This includes winning back to back games coming into this match and they will be a threat to Everton.

Team News:

Everton: Mason Holgate has a knock but it is thought to be minor and he will be assessed before the game. Alex Iwobi suffered a hamstring injury during the Tottenham game, officials are remaining optimistic but it wouldn’t be a surprise if he misses this game so soon after. Theo Walcott has returned to training following his operation and could be back in a few weeks.

Southampton: Though longer term injuries are slowly building up for the club with 4 players out there are no new injuries to report ahead of this game.

Everton vs Southampton Head to Head:

Everton beat Southampton in the earlier fixture this season 2-1.

Southampton beat Everton in this fixture last season 2-1.

The last 3 meetings have ended with the correct score of 2-1. Two wins for Evertton.

The last 5 league meetings have seen both teams to score.

Everton vs Southampton Prediction:

We think Everton can bounce back here and get the right result. They have played overall good football and looked confident, and what is telling is that from their 4 games played since the restart they have only conceded 2 goals. They need to score more but you get the sense with Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the team that goals are just waiting for them.

Southampton would have been thrilled to bits to beat Manchester City, though the truth is that they were under immense pressure for most of the game to hold on to that lead. They have done really well lately and will be a tough opponent for Everton who are somehow going to have to keep Danny Ings quiet. Ings scored in the fixture earlier in the season, but we feel Everton will just have too much for the Saints in this encounter but have also covered the draw for extra safety.

Everton vs Southampton Betting Tips:

Asian handicap (0.0 Everton) at 1.55

Anytime goalscorer: Richarlison at 2.60

Both teams to score at 1.75
