Everton vs Newcastle: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Thursday 27th April 2023
Kick off at 7:45pm BST
Venue: Goodison Park

Match Preview:

This will be a huge and tense game at Goodison Park as Everton face the prospect of being relegated for the first time since the 1950s and they will be up against one of the best teams in the league.

Everton are in 18th place with 28 points and a win here would really boost the club, first out of the bottom three and into 16th but for their confidence too and it’s 7 games without a victory going back six weeks to when they beat Brentford here. It could be argued that Everton were given at least a stay of execution last night as Leeds and Leicester drew 1-1 and both teams getting a point was probably better than one team getting all three. Everton have earned 3 points from their last 15 and their last game they were able to draw 0-0 at Crystal Palace. A draw here would not be good enough as they would stay in the bottom three on goal difference and let’s not forget that Sean Dyche’s side could be 19th if Nottingham Forest have won their game on Wednesday evening.

Home form for Everton has been a huge problem with 8 defeats from 16 games and just 5 wins and their last home game ended in a 3-1 loss to Fulham, only the Cottagers second ever win at Goodison- the first came last season. These seem like new depths of misery for Everton who are lacking a genuine goalscorer. While Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been a welcome return he may not be up to speed just yet and he repeatedly keeps getting injured and has missed long spells not just this season but in previous campaigns too which has hurt the club.

Newcastle have been on a great level and the only thing on their minds is to play Champions League football next season. The club took giant strides to that goal as they destroyed Tottenham 6-1 at the weekend and were 5-0 up after 21 minutes of a quite stunning game. Given that Tottenham needed to win to put pressure on Eddie Howe’s side for a top four spot just adds to what Newcastle had done and the club look like they have one foot in the Champions League door. Newcastle are in 3rd place and they would love to finish there and above Manchester United, as both clubs have 59 points. They are 5 points clear of Aston Villa but have plenty of games in hand it almost seems a given that both have done enough to qualify for Europe’s greatest competition.

There will be added spice to the game because of Anthony Gordon, the local player who made the switch to Newcastle. If he appears expect quite an negative atmosphere. However Gordon hasn’t been getting the time he would like and it is questionable if Howe will play him, we will have to wait and see.

Team News:

Everton: Mason Holgate is suspended as he was sent off last weekend. Seamus Coleman has been missing with a hamstring injury and remains a doubt for this game and will likely just miss out. Amadou Onana is being tipped to return from a minor groin injury. Ruben Vinagre remains sidelined with an Achilles injury.

Newcastle: Allan Saint-Maximin is set to miss out again due to his hamstring but will be assessed. Fabian Schar has the same issue but is being tipped to be ready for this clash.

Everton vs Newcastle Head to Head:

Last season Everton won this fixture 1-0.

In the reverse fixture earlier in the season Newcastle won 1-0.

Newcastle have won 4 of the last five meetings.

There is a 60% chance to see both teams to score.

Everton vs Newcastle Prediction:

Everton will have the worry that Newcastle currently has the 3rd best away record in the league and have won 27 points from a possible 48. While the Magpies did lose their last away game to Aston Villa they have been able to win 3 of their last four on the road and have only lost 3 so far in this campaign. There is no doubt then that Newcastle will be regarded as the favourites to win this game.

Over the years Everton have had favourable results over the Magpies but recently that has changed and the teams seem worlds apart now. It will take an incredible performanced laced with luck for Dyche’s side to get anything from this game, and as said earlier in the article a draw isn’t going to cut it now, three points haven’t been won for over a month and the worry remains as to how Everton will score goals. Newcastle will be the more relaxed side but at the same time manager Howe will not want a repeat of the Villa defeat, in this moment it is about focus, and while Newcastle may not be scoring six goals like they did last weekend it is hard to see past them reaching the 60 point marker.
