Everton vs Newcastle: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Thursday 17th March 2022
Kick off at 7:45pm GMT
Venue: Goodison Park

Match Preview:

You will be able to feel the tension of Everton’s fans even if you’re nowhere near Goodison Park on Thursday evening as the Toffees play a game in hand over their direct rivals this week. Normally playing Newcastle at home could be seen as three points for Everton but this of course is a different Newcastle side, however despite Everton’s poor form they have been installed as the favourites to win this game.

This match won’t signal Everton’s survival or relegation but because of a plethora of harder games, at least on paper, coming up it could be quite pivotal. Everton come into this match in 17th place with only goal difference saving them from being in the bottom three and they have 22 points. The clubs main rivals Watford who have the same points and Burnley with 21 points do not play until next month now because of the international break so a win here would give the club quite a psychological boost going into next month. Of course even victory would mean that Frank Lampard’s side remain in 17th place as they are four points adrift of 16th placed Leeds.

It is shocking to think that since the end of September Everton have won just 2 league games and they have lost their last 4. The clubs last defeat was at home against Wolves in a game that finished 1-0 to Bruno Lage’s side. Overall at home Everton have lost 7 games from 13 played and have earned just 3 points from their last 15 on offer.

Newcastle’s run of 9 games unbeaten came to an end at the weekend as they lost 1-0 away to Chelsea. To be fair it was a good performance from the Magpies and only small details prevented the draw. The club have played 2 more games than Everton but have also pulled nine points clear of their hosts. Eddie Howe’s side had won their last 3 games in a row before the Chelsea defeat.

On the road it is just 3 wins so far from Newcastle but their form has drastically changed since January and all those wins have come between then and now. This includes recent victories against Southampton and Brentford two clubs who Everton lost to when they played away from home.

Team News:

Everton: Dominic Calvert-Lewin is being tipped to return from an unspecified absence. Fabian Delph will not return until after the international break with a thigh injury and Yerry Mina is out for at least another four weeks with the same injury.

Newcastle: Fernandez is a major doubt with a muscle injury. Joelinton will be assessed but is also a doubt with a groin strain. Kieran Trippier is out long term with a foot injury.

Everton vs Newcastle Head to Head:

Earlier this season in the reverse fixture Newcastle beat Everton 3-1.

Everton have lost the last 3 meetings between the sides and it’s been 4 years since the club recorded a win at home to Newcastle.

There is a 60% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Everton vs Newcastle Prediction:

Newcastle come into this game with absolutely zero pressure, are playing good football and have a lot of confidence. Their recent loss to Chelsea was one of those results where they know they did well and this is still a learning process for a club who now have high ambitions. Depending on results around them the Magpies could potentially move up to 12th place which back in January may well have been laughed off.

The worry for Everton is where is the next win coming from? They have a team that when they click and show passion and can keep the ball they can win these types of games especially at home. But we know that Everton will not react well if they go a goal down and the danger signs are there that Newcastle are going to at least score. Newcastle also have a very good recent record over the Toffees and they are a great price, therefore backing the away side to get at least a draw against a very low confident Everton side may be a sensible pick.
