Everton vs Newcastle: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Thursday 7th December 2023
Kick off at 7:30pm GMT
Venue: Goodison Park

Match Preview:

Everton are having to fight in some ways more than any other club after their 10 point deduction handed down for breaking FFP rules. The club would have come into this game in 13th place, instead they are in 18th and two points behind safety which currently is Luton.

Everton’s away form has been better than at home and that was underlined this past weekend when they won their fourth game on the road by beating Nottingham Forest 1-0. Despite this hardly being a vintage season for the Toffees they deserve credit where credit is due and currently have the fourth best away record in the league. Recent form has seen an upturn with just one defeat in their past five games and they have earned 10 points from their last 15. At home though the club are struggling with just 1 win from seven games they have lost five and home fans have only witnessed five goals since August. The club's last home game ended in a 3-0 loss to Manchester United.

Newcastle keep pushing up the table and making inroads and have won three of their last four games. They need to find a little bit more consistency but with some players returning from injury they may well start to do that. Last weekend they dominated against Manchester United but only won 1-0 still the three points were welcomed and it was a justified result. The Magpies are in 6th place and their objective will be to finish in the top four and a win could well propel them here if other results go their way. However Newcastle’s problems have lay away from home with just 5 points won they have lost 50% of games and they have gone their last three games without a win following draws against West Ham and Wolves and their latest game on the road ended in a 2-0 defeat against Bournemouth.

Team News:

Everton: Amadou Onana is likely to miss out again but has recovered well from a calf injury but may not be risked for the midweek game. Dominic Calvert-Lewin will be assessed following a muscle injury and is rated good to return for this game. Andre Gomes has made progress but has a lack of match fitness and may miss out and Dele Alli is out long term with a hip injury.

Newcastle: Nick Pope has been ruled out for 4 months with a shoulder injury. Anthony Gordon has a hip injury although it isn’t thought to be serious and he will be assessed. Sean Longstaff will miss out again as he recovers from an ankle injury but could be back in 10 days. Javier Manquillo is expected to miss out again due to a groin injury. Elliot Anderson could return in two weeks from a back injury. Dan Burn and Harvey Barnes are both likely for a return in three weeks from respective toe and back injuries. Matt Targett and Sven Botman are out long term and Sandro Tonali is suspended for the season.

Everton vs Newcastle Head to Head:

Last season in this fixture Newcastle won 4-1.

Newcastle have won 5 of the last six meetings.

In the last 5 games when Everton have been at home they have managed just one victory over Newcastle.

There is a 70% chance to see both teams to score.

Everton vs Newcastle Prediction:

Could the motivation be greater for Everton? Following Luton’s dramatic defeat on Tuesday evening Everton would be in 17th and climb out of the bottom three despite a 10 point penalty fine with a win here. Everton have been playing good football and have been creating many chances in games even when they have lost. Newcastle look like they can be gotten at from the back and have a shaky defence on the road. Of course the Magpies possess the better quality and have a good solid record over Everton in recent years home or away.

Newcastle’s poor away form is telling though and their pricing to win is good value. Therefore we will back the away side as we can also cover the draw on the refund. Newcastle will create chances and be a danger but it is also a blow to have your goalkeeper in Nick Pope ruled out for a period of time. His understanding with the back four would be like instinct and Newcastle’s injury worries continue to be a problem for them. That will give Everton hope but Everton's home form is terrible and Newcastle still possess the better quality so we don't see Everton winning this.
