Match Preview:

Manchester United are not the team you want to be facing when you are staring down on a relegation battle but then again at the same time this isn’t the Manchester United of old. However Everton will be the underdogs to win this game and will be very aware of the task in hand.

Not since the 1950s have Everton been relegated but as each week passes it is becoming more and more like a reality that the Toffees will be. Each time promises are made manager Frank Lampard says the right words in the press conferences and change is expected and then Everton either put in a non performance or work hard only for the defence to make schoolboy errors such as the game against Burnley in midweek. This felt like a must win match for Everton and they were actually 2-1 up at half time but lost 3-2. That was a blow to a relegation rival but also highlighted how poor Everton’s defence has been this season. To add salt to injury Burnley were struggling for form and goals and got 3 in one game.

Everton are 17th and if they finish in that position just watch the mass celebration on the blue half of Merseyside erupt, but once the dust settles every fan will know that 17th is simply not good enough. Just 1 point separates Frank Lampard’s side from the bottom three however even if they lose this game they would remain 17th until at least Sunday when Burnley play. Watford could beat Leeds on the Saturday but would not go above Everton unless we witnessed a huge score for them.

Everton have lost 4 of their last 5 games but they did win their last home game which finished with a 1-0 victory over Newcastle. It is two home wins from their last four but there are two defeats sandwiched in between as a reminder of how fragile the club have been this season.

Manchester United on their day they can beat many clubs but the lack of consistency which has bugged the club for many years is still there and it is the reason that they may not finish in 4th this season. But they need to give it everything in their final 8 games. Form for Ralf Rangnick’s side is mixed with 8 points from their last 15 but only 1 victory in their last four games. Their last match ended in a 1-1 draw at home to Leicester and away from home their last game ended in a 4-1 battering at Manchester City. However overall United’s away form is not too bad with just 3 defeats so far.

United would move into 5th place with a win but have many direct rivals with games in hand to boot so these are still difficult moments for the club even if they win here. Of course the objective for the club has to be to take each game as it comes but can they realistically believe that consistency will finally come to the club after what we have witnessed during the season?

Team News:

Everton: Andre Gomes is being pencilled in to return after his knock and will be assessed. Donny van de Beek is ineligible to face his parent club. Yerry Mina isn’t due back for another 10 days at least from his thigh injury. Nathan Patterson is out for the rest of the season after picking up an ankle injury. Andros Townsend is also out for the season with his knee injury.

Manchester United: Cristiano Ronaldo missed the last game with illness and will be assessed. Edinson Cavani misses out again due to his calf but is due back next week. Luke Shaw will be assessed because of a leg injury and is 50/50 for this game.

Everton vs Man Utd Head to Head:

Last season this fixture finished 3-1 to Manchester United.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture the game ended 1-1.

In the last 15 meetings Everton has just 1 victory which happened in 2019 when, at home, they won 4-0.

There is a 60% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Everton vs Man Utd Prediction:

Even though this is a fixture that would have been much more daunting for Everton ten years ago this is still a game where the likely result could go against them. Manchester United still have a wealth of quality players that can punish any team in midfield and up front and this will be a huge test for Everton.

The problem for the Toffees is that United need the win to keep their top 4 hopes alive so they will be charging forward from the first whistle. But let’s not kid ourselves we have seen a fragile back bone from United at times where they have failed to keep a lead and Everton really need to put in a performance much like they did when they faced Manchester City here.

However Everton has a poor record against United and even a draw may not be the best result for Frank Lampard’s side. Everton have showed promise in parts of games, much like United at certain times but they keep losing games and it is very hard to think that Everton will keep a clean sheet here and if that occurs the home side could be heading for their 19th defeat of the season.
