Everton vs Man City: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 28th September 2019
Kick off at 5:30pm BST
Venue: Goodison Park

Match Preview:

Evertonian's might be dreading this game after recent form as they welcome the champions to Goodison Park for this early evening Saturday kick off.

Last weekend at this stadium Everton lost 2-0 to Sheffield United in a game which was an expected three points. It dropped Everton to 14th place with 7 points and it also meant that the club have now lost 3 from their last four games.

Manager Marco Silva has suggested that some of his players have gone in hiding, meaning going missing during matches but one can also come to the conclusion that the Portuguese does not know his best team or tactics.

Some of the pressure was taken off him when Everton beat the other team in Sheffield, Sheffield Wednesday in the Carabao Cup 2-0. The Toffee men are now in the 4th round of a competition which is celebrating its 60th year and it is the one domestic competition that they have yet to win.

What was impressive is that striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored both goals in that victory and surely that should be enough to reclaim his place in the side. Although Everton did lose their last home game they did win their previous two with victories over Watford and Wolves.

Manchester City have reacted to defeat against Norwich by scoring 14 goals in their next three games. They made an easy match of Shaktar Donetsk away in the Champions League and also beat Preston North End 3-0 in the Carabao Cup. The best was the match in between that in the Premier League, a superb 8-0 victory over Watford, which means they have scored 14 goals without reply to them in the last 2 games.

But City have dropped 5 points already this season, the loss to Norwich and the 2-2 draw at home to Tottenham. Other than that it is business as usual for Pep Guardiola’s team who have goals all over the pitch. They have scored an incredible 24 goals from their opening 6 matches and they will be getting better and better as they attempt to chase down Liverpool who have taken a five point lead at the top of the table.

Team News:

Everton: Andre Gomes did have a rib injury but was pencilled in for this game, he might be assessed ahead of it. The only injury for the club is new signing Jean-Philippe Gbamin who has a long term thigh injury and is due back at the end of October

Manchester City: There are no new injuries for the club although 3 regulars will be missing on long term injuries in John Stones, Ayermic Laporte and Leroy Sane

Everton vs Man City Head to Head:

Last season this fixture ended 2-0 to Manchester City.

Manchester City have won the last 3 meetings between the clubs.

The last time Everton beat City was in 2017 when they stunned the club and won 4-0.

5 from the last 7 meetings has seen both teams to score.

Everton vs Man City Prediction:

Everton will prepare better for this match and surely there will be a reaction when the champions visit. Football is always ready to surprise and it will be fascinating to see if the club, who have underperformed this season, can garner an effort against a far superior technically gifted side in City.

The big worry for Everton is the goals being conceded. It is 9 goals in their last four games and they are about to face a team who put 8 past their opponents last weekend. If Everton are to win they would need at least 3 goals to fend off this City side, and it is difficult to see this happening. Expect Everton to be fairly negative and be happy with a point here. Silva has played a 4-3-2-1 in the previous two home fixtures, that seems quite cautious and it didn’t work against Sheffield United. The temptation for him will surely be to pack more of the defensive midfield out and try to stifle City, with again one striker left up front. Everton may produce something to surprise but it is difficult to see them getting the ball, and ultimately that could be the defining problem.
