Everton vs Liverpool: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 21st June 2020
Kick off at 7pm BST
Venue: Goodison Park

Match Preview:

One of the truly great fixtures will be taking place on Sunday evening when Everton host Liverpool in the Merseyside derby.

It will be odd to have no fans present given the usual fantastic atmosphere that a derby produces, but Everton will be glad at least to be playing at Goodison Park as playing there was under threat at least for this game because of certain rules now in place due to the pandemic.

The bad news for Evertonians is it is just a matter of time before they have to witness Liverpool become English champions, for the first time in 30 years. Though the good news is that Liverpool now can’t win the title at Everton, that would certainly have been rubbing the salt in the wounds. That dream vanished for Liverpool when Manchester City beat Arsenal in midweek.

Everton are currently in 12th place with 37 points and their form had dipped before the break, losing to Arsenal and Chelsea, though the Arsenal defeat was a harsh one and then drawing in between those games against Manchester United. Everton have not won a game since the beginning of February when they beat Crystal Palace.

Liverpool would have loved to have won the league at Goodison Park even if no one will admit it but they will still be raring to get back to footballing matters and beat their old enemy. The Reds have lost just once this season in a shock result away to Watford and their last game played before the break was a win over Bournemouth.

Jurgen Klopp’s team have the best away record in the league winning 37 points from a possible 42 and they have conceded just 9 goals on the road.

Team News:

Everton: Fabian Delph is a doubt with a muscle strain, he may be assessed before the game though. Jean-Phillipe Gbamin has an achilles injury he picked up in training and his miserable season for the club looks to be possibly over with this latest setback. Yerry Mina could miss the game with a thigh injury. Theo Walcot is ruled out with an abdominal injury and isn’t set to return until July.

Liverpool: The Reds have no new injury concerns ahead of the game.

Everton vs Liverpool Head to Head:

In the reverse fixture earlier in the season Liverpool beat Everton 5-2.

Last season this fixture ended 0-0.

In the league Everton have not beaten Liverpool since 2010 when, at home, they won 2-0.

Everton vs Liverpool Prediction:

We should be talking about this game as being a frantic end to end classic, and it may turn out that way. But you have to feel with an empty stadium it just won’t feel the same. For Everton the pressure is off slightly knowing that they don’t have to stop Liverpool winning the league on their own turf. However it has been 10 years now since Everton won a league match over Liverpool and a victory does feel long overdue. The club will be hoping that manager Carlo Ancelotti has devised a system to deal with them.

Liverpool have been fantastic of course over the past 18 months, and they could well start on the front foot and ask a lot of this Everton side who are carrying some injuries when Liverpool aren’t. The question is will Liverpool start just how Manchester City have, as if there was no break? Also we must remember just before the break happened Liverpool went out of a few competitions and lost a league match, will that poor form by their standards still be attached to them?
