Everton vs Liverpool: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League

Kick off at 8:15pm GMT
Venue: Goodison Park

Match Preview:

Here we go the 239th Merseyside derby will take place on Wednesday evening as is ever it should be quite an occasion.

First history will be made as Rafa Benitez now with Everton of course will become the first ever manager to have coached both sides. But how long will Benitez be at the club? That is the genuine question coming into this game as Everton have been in dreadful form. It’s a poor run and when you lose against Manchester City away from home that can be forgiven and you can move on. But there has also been defeats against the likes of Brentford, Watford and Wolves. There is concern at the club and this season just like last seems to be following a path- a good start, turns to average and then a poor period commences. Is it just the manager? Could we say that Carlo Ancelotti and Rafa Benitez are both poor or are the players on the pitch simply not performing? In any case the buck will stop with Benitez. Even a draw here would be seen as a good result and the pressure would ease significantly.

It’s been 1 point earned for the Toffees from their last 15 and they are now in 14th place and only six points above the bottom three. At home it has been 3 games without tasting victory with their last home match finishing 0-0 against Tottenham.

Liverpool are in 3rd place but are only 2 points behind league leaders Chelsea and already the Premier League title race looks to be between them, Chelsea and Manchester City. The Reds did stumble earlier in the month but have now won their last two games in a row including thrashing Southampton 4-0 this past weekend.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have the 2nd best away record in the Premier League and have only lost once on the road and indeed this season. Perhaps the good news for Everton is that Liverpool lost their last away game which came against West Ham.

Team News:

Everton: Andre Gomes looks likely to still be out as he has a calf strain. Dominic Calvert-Lewin will be pushing to make this game however reports suggest he is still two weeks away from a full return after his thigh injury. Tom Davies is out with a knee injury. Mason Holgate is still suspended after his red card vs Tottenham. Yerry Mina is out with his hamstring.

Liverpool: Roberto Firmino is out with his hamstring injury though there has been no updates on his situation. Joseph Gomez is out with a calf injury. Naby Keita with a hamstring injury. Curtis Jones is still likely to be out with his eye injury.

Everton vs Liverpool Prediction:

Hopefully from an Everton prespective Benitez can rally his team here in an almost us v them scenario. Because Liverpool come into this game with a lot of confidence and a much better squad. Being at Goodison Park the pressure is more on Everton and that means they will have to come out and try to ruffle some feathers. That is all well and good but they could also expose themselves too. Everton will need the defence to be solid and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to be on his game but this is a very difficult ask for the home side.

Liverpool will need to ride out some attacks but it is in midfield where they will look to control the game and in attack of course they will be as dangerous as ever. We expect a dominant performance from the visitors who could well put a few goals past their local rivals.
