England Premier League
Saturday 6th April 2024
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: Goodison Park
Match Preview:
Everton have won 5 points from their last 36 on offer and haven’t won a game since mid December, we talk of ‘crisis’ and Everton are one of those teams in one. Sean Dyche the manager has largely avoided negative press because the FFP charges have overshadowed Everton’s season and let’s not forget that possibly next Monday we will find out if Everton will face more points deductions. This is a miserable time for the club, who have been unlucky in some of their defeats but overall are suffering from a lack of real quality on the pitch and confidence is obviously low. Despite the gloom Everton could well stay up given that Luton in 18th keep dropping points. The Toffees are 4 points clear of the bottom three although that figure is really 5 because of superior goal difference. This is like a cup final game for Everton though as they prepare to go head to head with a bottom three rival. Some say at key stages of the season that some games are 6 point duels, this one feels like a 9 pointer. At home Dyche’s side have only recorded 3 wins at home this season and that could yet be their downfall.
Burnley are in 19th place but will rue the amount of games they let slip from winning positions. If Burnley were to win here they would still be in 19th because of goal difference but would join Luton on the same points and this would still be a huge victory for them going forward. But the problem for Burnley is that wins are hard to come by with just 4 so far in this campaign. However there has been an overall improvement from Vincent Kompany’s side who are fighting to stay up and have gone their last 4 games unbeaten albeit three of those have ended in draws but there have been some impressive results. The 2-2 away draw against Chelsea is an obvious stand out and it is performances like that that will be worrying Everton.
Team News:
Everton: Amadou Onana has a knock and will be assessed, Arnaut Danjuma has fitness issues and is a doubt to make this game. Lewis Dobbin is sidelined with an ankle injury and Dele Alli is out long term with a groin injury
Burnley: The Clarets have no new injuries but have longer term ones for Ameen Al Dakhil, Jordan Beyer, Han-Noah Massengo, Aaron Ramsey and Nathan Redmond
Everton vs Burnley Head to Head:
This season in the EFL Cup Everton beat Burnley at home 3-0.
The last time the clubs met here in the league was in 2021 and Everton also scored 3 goals in a 3-1 win.
Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Everton won 2-0.
4 of the last six meetings have seen both teams to score.
Everton vs Burnley Prediction:
Everton have the better recent results over Burnley but are on a downtrend it is easy to see but at the same time when we see this there is usually that turning point, but with Everton the future looks misty. Burnley on the other hand are playing good football and they would be above Everton had they been able to keep their leads. This is a big ask for the Clarets but you sense there is a going in for the kill attitude about the club and they will be thinking about how they at times were able to tame Chelsea. Burnley are in good form for them and that is the bottom line, this is a game between a team in form and one who are playing like they are already relegated even though the Toffees come into this in 16th place.
