England Premier League
Saturday 3rd October 2020
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: Goodison Park
Match Preview:
With 3 wins in a row this is Everton’s best start to a Premier League campaign since 2007 and they enter this game in 3rd place with only goal difference separating the club from 1st. It has been a very positive time for the Toffeemen and they are playing good, slick football and scoring goals.
Whilst the midfield seems to have reawoken spearheaded by the talents of James Rodriguez, one player who seems to have gone on to a different level under the guidance of Carlo Ancelotti is Dominic Calvert-Lewin. A reliable striker in the past, but one could have argued that he didn’t score enough goals, now he can’t get enough of them. He is joint top scorer at the moment with Jamie Vardy with 5 goals and has scored 2 hat tricks in all competitions.
His second hat trick came in midweek as Everton thumped West Ham 4-1 to knock the Londoners out of the Carabao Cup and advance to the quarter finals. These are exciting times for Everton.
Brighton have lost to Manchester United twice in the space of four days. At the weekend they were defeated 3-2 in what felt a little controversial as the final whistle whistle had been blown at 2-2, although the referee had decided a penalty was going to be awarded to United. Brighton had fought back in the game only for that to happen. Graham Potter made many changes to his side for the Carabao Cup encounter with United and paid the price as they convincingly lost 3-0. One has to question why he would make so many changes, and it may come down to the fact that surviving in the Premier League is financially better off than having a great cup run.
As for their league games they have lost 2 from their opening 3, with their only victory coming against Newcastle, which in fact was an impressive 3-0 result away from home. It’s not been the greatest start by the club although it is encouraging at least that they are scoring goals and have six so far.
Team News:
Everton: Allan has a groin injury picked up in the Carabao Cup match with West Ham. He is 50/50 to make this game but is likely going to miss out. Richarlison was injured in the same game with his ankle but it is thought to be minor and should be fine. Jonjoe Kenny also has an ankle injury and, like, Allan is likely to miss this one.
Brighton: Alireza Jahanbakhsh suffered a recent hamstring injury in the Carabao Cup and will miss this game, he is being pencilled in to return after the international break. Davy Propper has an achilles injury and is likely going to miss this match.
Everton vs Brighton Head to Head:
Last season Everton won this fixture 1-0.
The teams have only met each other 3 times at Goodison Park in the last decade and Everton have won all three matches.
There is a 70% chance to see under 2.5 goals.
Everton vs Brighton Prediction:
Evertton come into this game on a high, they could go top of the league with a big result, but at this time what is important is getting 4 wins out of four for the club, that would feel somehow historic as the league stops for a couple of weeks due to international games. It would also set up the derby game with Liverpool after the break nicely.
It is best to check last minute updates on Everton’s injuries, because if Richarlison and Allan can’t make the final cut that would be a blow to Carlo Ancelotti. But there is a lot of confidence in the side and Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s form has been awarded by an England call up. One would feel at home especially that Calvert-Lewin is going to be a big danger here.
Brighton have been unlucky so far and have played some good football, good enough to have more points. If Everton don’t dominate in midfield and show their qualities the away side will be a danger. We have to respect that they have already gone to Newcastle and got a 3-0 win, so a win here would not be the biggest shock ever. However Everton are scoring goals and imposing themselves on games and we expect the blue half of Merseyside to get another victory.
