Everton vs Aston Villa: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Thursday 16th July 2020
Kick off at 6pm BST
Venue: Goodison Park

Match Preview:

Everton could condemn Aston Villa to relegation and they will be looking for all three points here in this home match.

The Toffees have been pretty terrible recently and have come under a lot of criticism for their attitude. There has been encouraging games like beating Leicester but at the same time they have recently looked like they just can't be bothered, and because of this ultimately the club will be missing out on European football for next season. The next objective then is trying to finish at least in the top half of the table.

Home form has been good with no defeats in their last five but results have been dogged by too many draws, 3 of those games have finished in draws. Their last game at Goodison Park finished 1-1 against Southampton. This wasn’t the worst ever result given that they were trailing in that game and Southampton are a dangerous side.

Aston Villa need a win here and they look increasingly like they will go down this season. Even if some of their play has improved they still seem like a club who are taking one step forward and two steps back. They have lost just over 60% of their games and away from home they have been defeated 12 times from 17 games. On average they are conceding 2 goals per game. Their last away game ended in a 2-0 defeat at Liverpool.

Team News:

Everton: Fabian Delph remains sidelined, Fabian Delph joins him after picking up an injury in their last game. Mason Holgate and Andre Gomes both have a chance of returning from injury in this game.

Aston Villa: Bjorn Engels, Wesley and Tom Heaton are unavailable to play. Kortney Hause and Neil Taylor are both doubtful for this encounter.

Everton vs Aston Villa Head to Head:

Earlier in the season Aston Villa beat Everton 2-0.

The clubs have not played at Goodison Park since 2015 when Everton won 4-0.

In the league Aston Villa have won just 1 game from the last 12 against Everton.

There is a 70% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Everton vs Aston Villa Prediction:

The away game for Everton earlier in the season was one of the Toffees most toothless of the campaign. They almost gave the win to Villa and Everton fans would hope to see a much more improved performance over that. The problem is recent performances don't fill us with confidence, and there is only one team coming into this game under intense pressure and that's Aston Villa.

Aston Villa need to find wins and coming to Goodison Park would normally be tough for them. This is a tough game to call, and it's mainly because we don't know what Everton we will get. Will they be freshly motivated after their criticism, or will they continue playing like holidays have started early? We think Ancelotti will demand a response, and push for the win, but a draw can't be ruled out.
