England vs Switzerland: Preview and Prediction

UEFA Nations League
Tuesday 11th September 2018
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: King Power Stadium

Match Preview:

England lost their first international match at Wembley in 6 years as Spain beat them 2-1 at the weekend in the first UEFA Nations League match for Gareth Southgate’s team.

It was a disappointing night for the Three Lions despite having a late goal harshly disallowed but Southgate admitted that Spain were the better side. England have looked strong against more physical teams but will have to accept that for now they are second best against teams who like to attack and have technical flair. Now England will turn their attentions to Switzerland.

The match will take place at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium and Southgate will have the opportunity to experiement which will mean a few changes as detailed below. One change will obviously be Luke Shaw who suffered a horrible head injury against Spain and will definetly miss this match.

The Swiss come into this game in high spirits after thrashing Iceland 6-0 in their UEFA Nations League game. This was their first match since losing their round of 16 clash against Sweden and Xheridan Shaqiri really made his mark on the Iceland victory. They will be the underdogs to win the game but will also have nothing to lose and could be a dangerous opponent.

Team News:

England: Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is expected to be rested in favour of Jack Butland. Luke Shaw is out with a head injury and Danny Rose could come in for him. Marcus Rashford has a niggling injury which isn’t serious but he could be replaced by Ruben Loftus -Cheek. Kyle Walker and James Tarkowski should start the game

Switzerland No new major injuries but it remains to be seen if coach Vladimir Petkovic will make major changes given this is a friendly game

England vs Switzerland Head to Head:

The last time the teams played was in 2015 where England at home won 2-0.

The last time the teams played a friendly in England was 10 years ago where England won 2-1.

Switzerland have not beaten England in any match since 1981.

England vs Switzerland Prediction:

Gareth Southgate may ring the changes as the game goes on but England should start with a strong squad. He will be determined not to lose this game as the pressure will start to build up with back to back losses. The players have made it clear that they felt their goal against Spain which would have made it 2-2 should have counted so they will be a wounded animal and we expect them to ease to victory.

At the same time the Swiss are a difficult team to play against so we don’t expect many goals if they start with a strong team. This will be a fast paced, physical game and a test but it is one that England should be able to pass.

England vs Switzerland Betting Tips:

England to beat Switzerland at 1.66

Anytime goalscorer: Harry Kane at 1.91

Correct Score: England to win 1-0 or 2-0 at 6.00 and 7.00
