England Premier League
Saturday 22nd February 2020
Kick off at 3pm GMT
Venue: Selhurst Park
Match Preview:
Crystal Palace are not safe from relegation even though for most of the season they have played like a team who have deserved to stay in the league. Recent form however has been very poor and they haven’t won a game yet this year.
The Eagles are in 14th place, have lost their last 3 games and are just 6 points from the drop. Based just on form from the past month Palace would be 19th and that has to sound alarm bells.
Even their home form has suffered losing back to back games coming into this, and those defeats were against Sheffield United and Southampton. Indeed Palace have not won at home since beating West Ham here on Boxing Day.
Newcastle lost 4-0 to Arsenal last weekend but the game didn’t feel like they were that outclassed. The Magpies dominated much of the first half but collapsed in the 2nd as Arsenal managed to score two goals in three minutes,
Steve Bruce’s side are just one point above Palace so there is a lot to play for here as the two sides look to push on. The club have only 1 win in their past five with recent results being dominated by draws. On the road they still have a poor return losing 8 from their 13 played they have no wins this year away from home.
Team News:
Crystal Palace: James Tomkins is 50/50 to be back for this game after his hamstring injury. Cenk Tosun is being pencilled back in to return for this game.
Newcastle: Christian Atsu is ill and looks set to miss this game. Jonjo Shelvey is out of this game but should return at the end of the month. Joelinton is a doubt with a thigh injury but will face a late test to make sure.
Crystal Palace vs Newcastle Head to Head:
Last season this match finished 0-0.
From the last 6 meetings Crystal Palace have only won 1 game.
The last 6 meetings have all been under 2.5 goals.
In the league Newcastle have not won at Palace since 2013.
Crystal Palace vs Newcastle Prediction:
A game which has a draw written all over it, and possibly the two teams would take a point at this stage of the season. Newcastle have a decent team but losing 4-0 to Arsenal may have taken something out of the club and it will be interesting to see if they can recover from that. Palace are low on confidence but we don’t think that will go on for too much longer and Roy Hodgson has proved time and again to find something within his teams that gets them back on winning runs. What the two teams do have in common is a long list of long term injuries which has hampered their seasons.
