England Premier League
Saturday 22nd April 2023
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: Selhurst Park
Match Preview:
The magic of Roy Hodgson's return means that Crystal Palace will be playing Premier League football next season. Of course in fairness to Patrick Vieira Palace may well have got the points they needed under the Frenchman but it seemed clear as daylight that the Eagles were stagnating and that a change was needed. So far Palace have won 3 games from three under Hodgson and what a story this is to end Hodgson’s career.
Crystal Palace are in 12th place and have 36 points and with the way the league is going 35 seems like the cut off point. Palace will be fine and still have 7 games left and they could well end up with 40 odd points by the end. Palace’s latest wins have come against Leicester, Leeds and Southampton all teams down there and fighting for survival and they will face another one of those teams in Everton. Current home form for the Eagles is a straight 5-5-5 but perhaps they can be concerned with just 14 goals scored, they won their last game here beating Leicester 2-1.
For Everton playing Crystal Palace evokes great memories as it is the comeback win from two goals down last May which secured Everton’s survival in the top flight. However that seems a long time ago and let’s not forget it was achieved at home. On the road Everton have been poor not just for this season but for many but if we look at this season we can see that the Toffees have only won 1 game so far. Indeed Everton have the 2nd to worst away record with 9 points earned from 45 and just 10 goals scored. The clubs last away game ended in a 2-0 loss to Manchester United and they have only been able to pick up 2 points on the road from their last 15.
Current overall form is also a worry for Sean Dyche’s side with no wins for five weeks and two defeats in a row coming into this game given last weekend’s 3-1 loss at home to Fulham.
Team News:
Crystal Palace: Nathan Ferguson has a knock and is only 50/50 to return. Wilfried Zaha remains out with a groin injury but could be back next week. Vicente Guaita is out with a calf injury but expected back by the end of the month. Nathaniel Clyne is sidelined with a knee injury that could see him miss the rest of the season, although there has been no confirmation of that.
Everton: Dominic Calvert-Lewin is being tipped to return after a lengthy time out and he will be assessed for fitness issues. Seamus Coleman is out due to his hamstring with no fixed return date. Abdoulaye Doucoure is still suspended but will return back next week. Ruben Vinagre is out with an Achilles injury. Andros Townsend is sidelined because of fitness issues.
Crystal Palace vs Everton Head to Head:
The teams last played here in the FA Cup just over a year ago which Crystal Palace won 4-0.
Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Everton won 3-0.
5 of the last seven meetings have seen both teams to score.
Crystal Palace vs Everton Prediction:
A win for Everton could take them up to 16th place if Leeds lose to Fulham and it is widely expected that Nottingham Forest will lose to Liverpool and of course Forest could send Everton back into the bottom three, as the only difference between the sides is goal difference. However if Leicester beat Wolves then Everton would be in the bottom three without a win. The problem for Everton is they are simply not picking up wins and as each week goes by they are then relying on teams below them to lose, that luck will run out and Everton seriously are back in trouble and for now one has to wonder if Dyche has the answers. His honeymoon period with the club is well and truly over and it was a quick one and this game remains an incredibly difficult one for the Toffees. With respect to Everton one only senses three points for them if Palace have an off day and the worries have really been underlined and exposed against Fulham last weekend, who up until then they were one of the worst in form sides in the league and still could come to Goodison and win.
Crystal Palace are riding on a wave and now it is about officially getting over the line and simply finishing the season strong. Games against Everton have either been a breeze or very close and quite a few of them have ended in draws over the past 10 years. Palace will be in good spirits though with zero pressure on them in this game unlike Everton and let’s remind ourselves that the Eagles have won their last two games when at home to Everton scroring 7 goals in the process and conceding just one. Everton’s appalling away form does not help their cause and it is difficult to see Dyche’s side get anything from this fixture.
