Crystal Palace vs Chelsea: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Tuesday 7th July 2020
Kick off at 6pm BST
Venue: Selhurst Park

Match Preview:

The midweek set of Premier League fixtures will kick off when Chelsea visit Crystal Palace on Tuesday.

Palace will be safe this season and you can see this in their recent play. They were soundly beaten by Leicester 3-0 at the weekend and that was the Eagles 3rd loss in a row. But with 42 points to their name it feels like they are just seeing out the final few weeks. This is unfortunate as Roy Hodgson’s team have an outside chance of possible Europa League qualification. The team are also much better than some recent results have suggested and the visit of Chelsea will not be an easy game.

The heat is on for Chelsea who remain in 4th place with 57 points and just one behind Leicester but there is the threat of Manchester United who have 55 points and losing a Champions League place at the death would be a hammer blow for Frank Lampard’s side.

The Blues bounced back well from their defeat against West Ham to brush aside Watford 3-0. It was a totally dominant display from Chelsea that would have reassured Lampard of the qualities of his team. Perhaps the West Ham loss is what it is, a rival London upping their game in the face of relegation, and Chelsea simply have to move on from that.

The truth is Chelsea have been very good since the restart and if we take latest form they would be 2nd in the league. One expects them to power on and possibly even clinch 3rd place, finishing 5th doesn’t seem like a reality for this team. The Blues have won 50% of their games away from home and have the 4th best record in the league. They have scored 33 goals on the road and only Manchester City have scored more.

Team News:

Crystal Palace: Jeffrey Schlupp could miss the remainder of the season with his knock. Martin Kelly looks set to be out for another week at least with his calf injury. James Tomkins could miss this game with a knock.

Chelsea: N’Golo Kante has a slight thigh injury though at this time it isn’t thought to be serious. Mateo Kovacic is ruled out with an achilles injury.

Crystal Palace vs Chelsea Head to Head:

Earlier this season Chelsea beat Crystal Palace 2-0 in the reverse fixture.

Last season this fixture ended 1-0 to Chelsea.

Chelsea have won the last 4 meetings in a row.

There is a 60% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

The last two meetings have had the correct score at half time as 0-0.

Crystal Palace vs Chelsea Prediction:

There is no doubt that Crystal Palace can cause Chelsea some problems and Lampard will be wary of his set of players playing away again. But Palace at this time just don’t look fully commited to the cause almost giving up the ghost. Chelsea have so much to fight for, drop points here and Manchester United could go above them, then what? Panic could well come into play and all of their hard work this season would be for nothing. This is why we believe Chelsea will approach this game like a final, where they need to walk away as victors, anything else and there could well be some question marks developing.
