Crystal Palace vs Cardiff: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League

Venue: Selhurst Park

Match Preview:

Who became the first team to beat Manchester City at home this season? That question may end up on a pub football quiz one day, but who could have suspected it would have been Crystal Palace to do it?

Palace were losing 1-0 away to the champions at The Etihad the writing was on the wall…. And then Palace roared back into contention against all life odds and betting ones and won the game 3-2. In truth the game played out like an old fashioned cup tie and all that was missing was commentary from John Motson and monkey nuts at half time. It was a special day indeed for one veteran and Palace’s manager Roy Hodgson.

Back to the business end and that shock win put Palace into 14th place and they have pulled 6 points clear of the bottom three. The victory also means back to back wins for The Eagles after their win against Leicester and this period could well end up being Palace’s most successful of the season thus far.

Whilst The Eagles have lost 50% of their games at home which is a poor record they have won their last two and lost just once in their last four. For now Palace seem to be on a winning roll.

Was there really any chance for Cardiff at the weekend? With Jose Mourinho sacked from Manchester United and a favourable cult legend in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer stepping in it seemed inevitable that the United players would start trying again and make a statement win, unlucky for Cardiff they did and they were beaten 5-1.

That match aside Neil Warnock’s team have not been in great form and have now lost 3 of their last 4 games. They are picking up points at home and that could save them as the season goes on. For now they are in 17th place and 2 points clear of the relegation zone.

Away from home is the depressing news for Cardiff who have the worst record in the Premier League with just 1 point won from a possible 24. They are shipping on average just over 2 goals a game.

Team News:

Crystal Palace: Christian Benteke is still out with a knee injury but the club are hopeful he will be back before the end of the month. Wayne Hennessey has a chance to be back (no pun intended) after his back injury. Martin Kelly (thigh) will be assessed as will Cheikou Kouyate (knock)

Cardiff: Joe Bennett should return after his knock, and whilst Cardiff have some long term injuries they have no new major ones coming into this game

Crystal Palace vs Cardiff Head to Head:

Crystal Palace won this match the last time the teams played here in 2013 which finished 2-0.

Crystal Palace have won 3 of the last 4 meetings.

4 of the last 5 meetings have ended in over 2.5 goals.

Crystal Palace vs Cardiff Prediction:

Normally we could say that after such a fantastic win there would be a slap in the face for Crystal Palace and they would just lose against a team nearer to them in the league. However Hodgson remains such an experienced coach and the fact is that Cardiff have been so poor all season away from home we can’t go against the home side here. They are scoring goals and have a lot of confidence throughout the team.
