England Premier League
Wednesday 27th January 2021
Kick off at 6pm GMT
Venue: Stamford Bridge
Match Preview:
And the wolves have come out…for Frank Lampard who was sacked by Chelsea this week meaning that four out of the last five managers sacked by the Blues have had their last league game played against Leicester.
After Chelsea slipped to 9th in the league that was deemed not to be good enough by the Chelsea board who, after spending a lot of money last summer, probably expected to be challenging for the league title. Chelsea are currently 11 points behind the league leaders and their recent Leicester defeat was their sixth of the season.
Chelsea have won just 1 game from their last five coming into this match and at home have won only 45% of their games with no wins this year. The target for the club now has to be Champions League qualification and they are 5 points from that target in a very tight league. Officially Lampard’s last game was a 3-1 win over Luton in the FA Cup at the weekend. It has been rumoured that Thomas Tuchel who coached PSG for a couple of years and led them to the Champions League final is poised to take over but he won’t be in the dug out for this game.
Wolves are in 14th and have won just 2 points from their last 15 on offer. This has been the worst period of results for the club in a year and there is a worry that the club are in a hole. Being 10 points clear of the bottom three no one is talking about relegation issues just yet but the club have really nosedived and it has happened very quick. Perhaps losing some key players has taken its toll. Raul Jimenez being the obvious case but then Daniel Podence found form only to get injured also, the club in short have been very unlucky in the last month or so.
From a possible 27 points on the road Wolves have won just 10 and have won just 3 games from 9. Wolves haven’t won away from home since they beat Arsenal at the end of November, which was coincidently when the Jimenez injury took place and he hasn’t been back since. Wolves last away match was against Brighton in a game that finished 3-3.
Team News:
Chelsea: The only concern for the Blues coming into this game is N’Golo Kante who is touch and go after recovering from injury but could be selected, he will face a late test.
Wolves: No new injuries for the club but Raul Jimenez, Daniel Podence and Jonny are still out and not due back any time soon.
Chelsea vs Wolves Head to Head:
Last season Chelsea won this fixture 2-0.
Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Wolves beat Chelsea 2-1.
Wolves have not won at Stamford Bridge since 1979.
Chelsea vs Wolves Prediction:
Was it just results that led to Lampard’s sacking or were the players simply unhappy with him. Some reports have suggested clashes and some of the newer players feeling that they were not being coached properly. These are simply allegations that may have no truth in them. However it has happened before when a ‘manager has lost the dressing room’ so to speak, and his departure may spark up the affected players into playing with more freedom and composure.
Wolves have a poor record at Chelsea and the problem with the club is key injuries and a lack of focus and zip. Wolves remain a good side and will create chances but the Chelsea team will want to impress their new manager who will surely be looking on, and we believe Chelsea could win comfortably.
Chelsea vs Wolves Betting Tips:
Chelsea to beat Wolves at 1.57
Chelsea to score 2+ goals at 1.72
