Chelsea vs West Ham: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 24th April 2022
Kick off at 2pm BST
Venue: Stamford Bridge

Match Preview:

This London derby should be quite a game as Chelsea and West Ham lock horns on Sunday. Only one of these sides is still in Europe and it isn’t Chelsea, that’s football, always able to surprise.

Chelsea have the FA Cup final to look forward too but their season by their standards has been a disappointing one. They recently gave a brave performance against Real Madrid in the Champions League but came up just short after a terrific comeback. Their league hopes have been over for some time and now they may not even finish 3rd although remain the favourites to do so. The Blues have 62 points and are 5 points clear of 4th. Form is not good though having lost 2 of their last three games and they were both at home. A 4-1 defeat against Brentford was followed up by conceding another four goals at home against Arsenal losing that one 4-2. It is clear that at this stage of the season this Chelsea team look a bit jaded now.

West Ham’s hopes of a top 4 finish look over now but fans would still want the club to at least finish in the top six and qualify for the Europa League again. Currently though they are in 7th place and are 2 points behind Manchester United but have played the same games. The Hammers have a very important match coming up next weekend as they play Eintract Frakfurt in the Europa League semi-finals, so it is all go for the club.

League form is not good for the Hammers who have just one win from their last four games. Their last game finished in a 1-1 draw against Burnley, although they were heading for defeat and equalised late on and could have won it, so it felt like a point gained in the end. Its been a few months now since West Ham won away and they have lost their last three.

Team News:

Chelsea: Antonio Rudiger is 50/50 to return from his groin strain. Mateo Kovacic is not due back for a few weeks with his ankle injury. Andreas Christensen has a knock and will be assessed but he is expected to return. Callum Hudson-Odoi is out long term with his Achilles.

West Ham: There could be a double blow for the Hammers as Kurt Zouma and Issa Diop both ankle could be out for the rest of the season, they continue to be assessed.

Chelsea vs West Ham Head to Head:

Last season Chelsea beat West Ham 3-0.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture West Ham won a five goal thriller, 3-2.

Chelsea have won 3 meetings from the last five.

There is a 60% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

Chelsea vs West Ham Prediction:

This could be a good time to play Chelsea as it is unlike the club especially under Thomas Tuchel to lose games in the way they have been doing. Not many Chelsea sides over the past decade have conceded 8 goals in two home games. But Chelsea have something to play for and that is Champions League qualification as the problem arises from Arsenal and Tottenham winning games and putting genuine pressure on the club.

West Ham look tired now and surely will pour all of their efforts into their European semi-final games, it would be huge for the club to make the final. They also have some key injuries in defence and form has been poor. However the Hammers have a good history of raising their game against the better sides but we expect to see a reaction from Chelsea and believe they should have enough to win this game.
