Chelsea vs West Ham: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 5th May 2024
Kick off at 2pm BST
Venue: Stamford Bridge

Match Preview:

Another London derby will see two teams who are in close contention with one another for a final European place. Chelsea have the advantage of not only being at home but also having a game in hand over the Hammers. As for Chelsea considering how much money they have spent this has been a difficult season but they will be looking to finish it strongly. The Blues have lost just once in their last five games although that was a good 5-0 hammering at the hands of Arsenal. Since then they have recovered by drawing 2-2 away to fourth placed Aston Villa and beating another London rival Tottenham 2-0 in midweek. Chelsea are in 8th place with 51 points and will have their sights on Manchester United if they can win this game. In fact win this and it’s not impossible to think that Chelsea could actually finish the season in sixth place.

West Ham remind us currently of Brighton as they have a manager in David Moyes who is being linked to leaving the club at the end of the season. It can never be good for players to hear of this but this seems to be very factual. The club has gone their last 3 games without a win after losses against Fulham and Crystal Palace and in their last game they drew 2-2 with Liverpool which felt like an improvement. The defeat against Palace after shipping 5 goals is still hanging heavy with fans and this means that the club come into this game with what appears to be ever darkening black clouds over them. While West Ham have won 7 games on the road they have also lost 8 however they are currently in a loss win pattern and if that continued they would win this one.

Team News:

Chelsea: Levi Colwill and Christopher Nkunku have a chance to return for this game and will be assessed due to a lack of match fitness. Axel Disasi has a knock and isn’t expected to recover on time. There are more doubts over the returns of Reece James, Raheem Sterling, Thiago Silva and Robert Sanchez, all could be assessed but may not be risked to come back for this weekend. Romeo Lavia, Wesley Fofana and Enzo Fernandez are all out for the rest of the season

West Ham: George Earthy has a chance to return after his head injury, Nayef Aguerd is less likely with an ankle injury and looks set to miss out

Chelsea vs West Ham Head to Head:

Last season in this fixture Chelsea won 2-1.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture West Ham won 3-1.

It’s been four years since West Ham beat Chelsea away from home.

The last 3 meetings in a row have all seen both teams to score.

Chelsea vs West Ham Prediction:

West Ham would go above Chelsea with a win here so the motivation should be good from them. The club have always been known to raise their game against sides who have a much bigger budget than them and we expect that the club can play their part here. However we think Chelsea have something a little different to them and some focus and expect at home for them to win this game and leave the Hammers in their shadow and end their opponents dream for any European football for next season. West Ham certainly has the quality to come here and win but they have looked out of sorts. Chelsea remain as unpredictable as ever but the recent win at home over Tottenham really sets them up nicely for this game.
