Chelsea vs Tottenham: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Wednesday 27th February 2019
Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: Stamford Bridge

Match Preview:

A massive London derby will take place on Wednesday night which could have ramifications for both sides. Chelsea are fresh from losing in the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City but it was a match that finished 0-0 rather than their recent 6-0 slaughter by the same side and The Blues only ended up losing on the penalty shoot out. In fairness the display was a huge improvement on Chelsea’s recent form and may have saved Maurizio Sarri’s job for now.

Chelsea have been in the news lately as they were handed a two window transfer ban by UEFA, the club will appeal but this is terrible news for the Londoners which could affect their football for the next year at least.

In the league Sarri’s side have slipped to 6th but there is only a 3 point gap to 4th and they do have a game in hand over their direct rivals. Form has been poor with just 1 win in their past 4 games and at Stamford Bridge they have won their last two matches and lost just one game here all season. A win in this game could be a massive step in the right direction not just for the club but also for Sarri’s job.

There is a real danger that Tottenham could implode. A few weeks ago there was the small chance of a league title, a week ago that was more about having a shoe in for 3rd place but after losing to Burnley last weekend who knows? Tottenham have a 7 point gap over 4th place but if their direct rivals win and they lose this match that gap will be swallowed up.

Spurs’ overall form is still very good where they have gained 12 points from their last 15 and their away form is in fact the best in the league despite losing 3 games. Harry Kane is back in the side and he did score against Burnley, but at the same time a defeat means that his comeback goal would have been forgotten about.

Team News:

Chelsea: Gary Cahill has been pencilled in for this match after his back injury earlier this month. Daniel Drinkwater has a tendon injury and missed the league cup final and could miss this game as a result. Davide Zappacosta is believed to have recovered from his illness and could be included in the squad

Tottenham: Eric Dier should be back after illness ruled him out of the last game. Dele Alli is believed to be another week away until he can come back into contention

Chelsea vs Tottenham Head to Head:

The teams played here as recent as January when Chelsea knocked Tottenham out of the Carabao Cup at the semi final stage.

Earlier in the season Tottenham won the reverse game 3-1 and became the first team in the league to beat the side this season.

In the league Tottenham have not won at Stamford Bridge since 1990.

Chelsea vs Tottenham Prediction:

Chelsea have been very poor recently but we saw just how disiplined they can be on Sunday, but did the team step up because it was a cup final? The truth is that ever since Sarri criticised his players they haven’t performed at their maximum capacity. Still at home against a London rival they should need very little motivation to put in a good performance. With Manchester United drawing and dropping points there is a good opportunity for Chelsea to get back into the thick of it all and seriously challenge for a top 4 place.

Every time Tottenham have slipped up this season they have been able to surprise everyone and pull something out of the hat, and they do have the best away record in the league. Expect this match to be very tight and close.
