England Premier League
Saturday 22nd February 2020
Kick off at 12:30pm GMT
Venue: Stamford Bridge
Match Preview:
A huge game will kick start the Premier League this weekend as the all London derby between Chelsea and Tottenham gets under way.
The battle for 4th remains an intense one and Chelsea have shown a lack of consistency but still are in 4th, however only by 1 point from Tottenham. The Blues have not won a game since January 11th when they beat Burnley and their last game was a home defeat against Manchester United.
There are serious question marks over Chelsea’s home results this season where they have won 5, lost 5 and drawn 3. They also have just one win at Stamford Bridge in their last five games and have earned only 18 points from a possible 39.
Tottenham will know all to well about Chelsea as the Blues went to their stadium and beat them 2-0, and that was with Jose Mourinho in charge. Tottenham have had a mixed start under Mourinho but recent form has been improved and they have won their last 3 games coming into this encounter, although without looking particularly impressive.
It’s a big game for Tottenham as they could go 4th with a win, and if Manchester City were to beat Leicester at the weekend they would suddenly be just 7 points from 3rd. The club have problems though, especially up front. There is no Harry Kane as we know and now Heung-Min Son is injured and could be out for some time, the same player that scored 2 as Tottenham beat Aston Villa 3-2 last weekend.
Recent away form has not been good for Spurs with just 1 win in their last four, but they have won 3 under Mourinho so far.
Team News:
Chelsea: Tammy Abraham could be back for this game and will be assessed. Andreas Christensen had a minor facial injury against Manchester United but could play here and will be assessed. Callum Hudson-Odoi has a hamstring injury, though it is thought not to be serious and he remains 50/50 for this game. N’Golo Kante is struggling and looks set to miss this game.
Tottenham: Heung-Min Son could miss a few months at least with an arm injury. He is the latest injury to the first team squad.
Chelsea vs Tottenham Head to Head:
In the last 10 years in the league Tottenham have just 1 win at Chelsea which happened in 2018.
Last season Chelsea won this fixture 2-0 and have won the last two meetings over Tottenham by the same scoreline.
There is a 60% chance to see over 2.5 goals.
Chelsea vs Tottenham Prediction:
Mourinho’s tactics back fired when the clubs played at Tottenham Stadium a few months back, but teams rarely get the better of him a second time without him learning something. The confidence and the team who are playing better rests with Tottenham, but losing Son is a major blow and the club do not have a good record at Stamford Bridge. However Chelsea have a better record away from home, form is not good and they could be missing some important players too, if N’Golo Kante doesn’t make this team that is a big miss.
We feel that this game could be much tighter this time round, and Mourinho's sides rarely lose by more than one goal, which makes backing the away side on the handicap more tempting than backing Chelsea to win at home where they have really struggled this season. With Mourinho still early in his career with Tottenham it means that he still has a passion and hunger for his team, and this could be one of those displays that he is able to project on them, an us v them mindset, which worked very well at Inter Milan. In other words when the chips are down the dogs of war are released, that will mean that Tottenham will have to be mean in defence and physical in midfield to get anything here.
