Match Preview:

It’s very probable that the loudest cheer of the season for Chelsea fans will come at the final whistle, which would signal the end of what has been a terrible season for them. Bringing in Frank Lampard has made little sense and in his 10 games so far in charge the club has just 1 win. Overall they have earned 4 points from 30 under him and over the course of a season would have ended up with 15 points. It’s something you couldn’t make up and one has to wonder if the Blues would have been relegated had they had 8 points less when Lampard arrived?

The misery continued in midweek as Chelsea were hammered 4-1 away to Manchester United and they have lost back to back games coming into this one. Chelsea’s only victory so far under Lampard came against Bournemouth and it’s been almost three months since home fans have witnessed a win. Huge change is needed and while Mauricio Pochettino will be drafted in once the season ends, one would also expect a few players to move on.

Newcastle have qualified for the Champions League and given that they were hovering around the relegation zone just 15 months ago that is quite miraculous. True money has been invested but the club haven’t signed major stars and most of their brilliant work has been down to manager Eddie Howe and fantastic team spirit. Recent form has seen a dip though with just one win in their last four but they will be more focused on the fact that they have confirmed their top four status. The Magpies have seen Manchester United go above them but they could take that place back with a win and then hope Erik ten Hag’s side either lose or draw their last game.

Chelsea vs Newcastle Prediction:

The most plausible result here is a draw. One would think that the players will give their all in the final home game of the season and Lampard’s last and possibly ever for Chelsea. It may well be the last team that Lampard will manage with any league title ambition also. For Newcastle the job is done for the top four and we don’t expect the team to be at 100%. However Howe may have one eye on 3rd place but at the end of the day the job has been done and reached.

For Chelsea the chance to back them probably should not be taken up, they simply can’t be trusted, even at home. We may not see a great spectacle but of course the players have nothing to lose and this could work in another way and perhaps we will see an end to end game, we don’t expect to though in what will also be a hot afternoon, so we could see the teams sharing the spoils.
