Match Preview:

Chelsea are on top of the league coming into this weekend and everything is working out like a dream for Thomas Tuchel. Of course the work going on behind the scenes has been incredible and the team look like a very different side to 12 months ago when Frank Lampard was in charge.

In midweek Chelsea thumped Juventus 4-0 in the Champions League and in the Premier League it’s just one defeat from 12 played. The Blues have only conceded 4 goals so far this season and the plaudits at this time feel never ending. Last weekend they went to Leicester and beat them 3-0. It says a lot about Chelsea that they can lose the services of £100m rated striker Romelu Lukaku and still win games and score goals- this is because there are goals all over this team and that is frightening, and of course they statistically have the best defence in the league.

However Chelsea would have been irked somewhat at only drawing 1-1 at home to Burnley in their last home match, having said that the Juventus result would have wiped that out for many fans but beating the old enemy would also go down very well.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is no more at Manchester United and has finally been sacked. The Watford defeat was simply too much for the owners to bear and the way it happened, a 4-1 defeat with the quality of players they have was the final straw. Solskjaer cannot complain too much he had almost 3 years in charge of the club and there were some ups but evidently too many downs too.

United come into this weekend in 8th place with 17 points and are six points from a top 4 finish. It is 4 defeats from the last five games but this has to be a new clean slate for the Red Devils. In a way it was given United’s super midweek result in the Champions League beating Villarreal 2-0 away from home. Ronaldo often heaped upon as the scapegoat did his job too and scored again.

Michael Carrick will take charge of this game for United but German manager Ralf Rangnick is the favourite to take over until the end of the season and is deep in talks with the club.

Team News: 

Chelsea: N’Golo Kante has a knee injury and he is a major doubt to be ready for this game but is being tipped to return in 1 week’s time. Ben Chillwell is out until the new year with his knee injury. Mateo Kovacic is out with a hamstring injury.

Manchester United: Edinson Cavani has a tendon injury but is 50/50 to return for this game. Fred will be assessed due to his ankle injury. Mason Greenwood could return after his Covid-19 illness but that hasn’t been confirmed. Harry Maguire is suspended for this game after his sending off vs Watford. Paul Pogba is out with a thigh injury with no set date confirmed. Luke Shaw had a head injury and will be assessed. Raphael Varane is not due back for another two weeks at least with his hamstring injury.

This is a game that reminds one of when Manchester United played Manchester City and it was clearly obvious before that derby game that United were going to get beaten by clearly the better side. This game has the same feeling over it but United will come into this one with a spring in their step, change at the top was needed and the win in midweek was a huge boost for the club.

But playing Chelsea at this time would be difficult for any club in Europe and they have been utterly brilliant and we don’t see them losing this game. Chelsea are odds on which may not suit every punter but United look quite short here in terms of quality and they are conceding goals much to easy. The absence of Varane and Maguire is not going to help either.
