Chelsea vs Man Utd: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 22nd October 2022
Kick off at 5:30pm BST
Venue: Stamford Bridge

Match Preview:

For almost 20 years this has been one of the great and competitive fixtures and on Saturday that should prove to be the case again. Graham Potter and Erik ten Hag will clash for the first time as both teams look to be stable top 4 sides this season.

Chelsea’s brilliant run of 4 wins in a row ended in midweek when they could only draw 0-0 at Brentford in a surprise result. They are currently in 4th place with 20 points but seven behind Arsenal and their rivals Manchester United are in 5th place and only one point behind, so there is plenty to play for. Chelsea have played four games at home so far and are undefeated winning 3 and drawing once and their last result here finished in a comprehensive 3-0 win over Wolves and it’s been 5 goals scored in their last two home games.

Manchester United have gone their last 3 games undefeated and seem to be getting stronger by every passing week under Ten Hag. Their last result in midweek beating Tottenham 2-0 another top four rival has been hailed as United’s overall best performance so far this season. While United have lost two games on the road they have also won 3 and their last away game finished in a 2-1 win over Everton. On that day Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 700th goal. However the last few days have been dominated by the Portuguese legend who left the Tottenham game early at his frustration of not being picked and he has been left out of the squad for this game. His relationship with Ten Hag looks dead in the water and with just three weeks to go until the Premier League breaks up for the World Cup, Ronaldo’s career at the Red Devils looks over.

Team News:

Chelsea: Conor Gallagher will be assessed after illness in midweek but is hopeful to take part in this game. An update on N’Golo Kante’s hamstring injury is not good and the midfielder will be out for 3 months. Reece James and Wesley Fofana are out until the end of the year both with knee injuries.

Manchester United: Harry Maguire is 50/50 to return following his hamstring injury, Anthony Martial is out with a back injury. Aaron Wan-Bissaka remains sidelined with a knock. Cristiano Ronaldo has been ejected from the match day squad for disciplinary reasons.

Chelsea vs Man Utd Head to Head:

Last season’s fixture finished 1-1.

The last 4 meetings have finished in draws.

There is a 70% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

Chelsea vs Man Utd Prediction:

Chelsea have been stable with Graham Potter in charge but perhaps that was expected under a new manager. The real test for him may come after the World Cup and the business end of the season. But you still get the feeling that Chelsea are a club in transition which doesn’t sound correct given that they were European champions in 2021, but with new ownership on board and a new manager they have a new identity. With Manchester United it is the same situation in terms of Ten Hag but with a difference- the Dutch man has already been under pressure this season after a slow start and we are now only beginning to see his qualities as he tries to turn the clubs fortunes around. So far so good and if this game was to end in yet another draw for the clubs this wouldn’t be a terrible result for United.

However we feel that Chelsea are yet to be tested in the Premier League under Potter, Ten Hag has had his tests having to face and beat Liverpool and Tottenham, and United will be fired up as normal to come to London and get the win. They also have a very good recent record at Chelsea and the price on them winning is terrific. This should be a close and physical game but we do still feel Chelsea have the quality to edge this game, but we feel covering the draw on the refund is an important level of extra safety.
