Chelsea vs Luton: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Friday 25th August 2023
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: Stamford Bridge

Match Preview:

For a club who has spent over £300m this summer Chelsea have not started the new season well. A 1-1 draw at home to Liverpool was followed up by a 3-1 loss against West Ham and there is already pressure on the club to start producing the football that club owner Todd Boehly is demanding. In fairness the season is very young but if the Blues were even to draw this game at home against the bookmakers favourites for relegation the sports press would have a field day.

Chelsea will be the outstanding favourites to win this game and not many people will see past that. They have the quality to score a few goals too and there will be a good argument that up to the first hour of their defeat to West Ham they were in the game. We are seeing flashes of what this side can do but for now everything seems fairly hollow, but this game looks like the perfect one to silence some critics.

Luton had a wake up call on the opening weekend of the season as they were spanked 4-1 away to Brighton, while a loss was expected the score line wouldn’t have done any players any favours in the confidence stakes. Luton have only played 1 game so far so they haven’t been able to shrug off their Brighton defeat. The club are in 17th place and while they are the big underdogs here they can look at the table and note that their opponents are in 14th place.

Team News:

Chelsea: Reece James has a hamstring injury it is unclear the period of time he will miss but he could be out at least for 3 weeks. Marcus Bettinelli, Armando Broja, Trevoh Chabolah, Wesley Fofana and Christopher Nkunku are all out long term.

Luton: Daniel Potts is missing with an ankle injury as is Jordan Clark with the same problem. Gabriel Osho has a knee injury but could be assessed. Reece Burke has a knock and will be assessed ahead of the game.

Chelsea vs Luton Head to Head:

The teams last 3 meetings have all been in the FA Cup and Chelsea have won every time.

Luton’s last game away to Chelsea was in 1991 which they lost 4-1.

Chelsea vs Luton Prediction:

Despite some obvious problems Chelsea really have no excuses here not to get the job done and not only win the game but score a few goals too. It would be an early season shock if Mauricio Pochettino’s side were unable to pick up the victory and quite frankly for anyone associated with the club it isn’t worth thinking about what the fallout would be like. However it is early days and a couple of wins including a convincing win here will calm the waters down again.

The h2h for the teams isn’t worth bothering about too much, almost every player on the pitch wasn’t even born the last time the clubs played a league game here and that was in Chelsea’s original stadium, the Premier League had not even started up. The teams have met recently though in the FA Cup and in those two games Chelsea were able to score six goals. We expect the game perhaps to start with some tension even for the stars of Chelsea as they try to find their system and tactics. For Luton they have little to lose but at the same time would not want to be thrashed. Chelsea are big odds on and no value here so we need to look into different markets.
