England Premier League
Saturday 29th September 2018
Kick off at 5:30pm BST
Venue: Stamford Bridge
Match Preview:
The early Saturday evening kick off will be a mouth watering tie between Chelsea and Liverpool, two teams tipped to win the Premier League title. They are also two teams who remain unbeaten this season.
The fires were stoked this week as the teams met in the Carabao Cup at Anfield and Chelsea sensationally came back from a goal down to knock out Jurgen Klopp’s team 2-1.
The rivalry between the two sides is in some ways a new one, starting over a decade ago with their Champions League knock out games and this is sure to be a heated and tense battle.
A win could see Chelsea go top of the league and complete a miserable week for Liverpool. As for Liverpool they are hoping to win their 7th straight game of the season. They have been very impressive in only shipping 2 goals this season and for now Klopp’s decision to bring in Alisson in goal is paying dividends.
Indeed this fixture will showcase the two most expensive goalkeepers in world football as Chelsea have Kepa in goal. The combined transfers of Alisson and Kepa add up to almost £150m and so in theory the game should end 0-0.
Chelsea have a 100% record at home with 3 wins from 3 games and Liverpool have a 100% record away from home, something will have to give at the weekend.
Team News:
Chelsea: Pedro and Antonio Rudiger are nearing fitness and could be both in contention to make the final squad
Liverpool: Virgil van Dijk suffered a minor rib injury in the Southampton game and there is a chance he will be ready for this match
Chelsea vs Liverpool Head to Head:
The last time the teams met at Stamford Bridge in the league Chelsea won 1-0.
Liverpool have not won at Chelsea for 2 years.
3 of the last 5 meetings in the league have finished with the correct score of 1-1.
Liverpool have not beaten Chelsea either home or away in any competitions in the last 4 games.
Chelsea vs Liverpool Prediction:
This is a huge game for both teams both for points and also on a psychological level. Liverpool have already beaten one title rival in Tottenham away from home and if they can do it again against Chelsea it will mean giant strides for the club. But Chelsea is a huge ask and this will be a very close game.
Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has claimed his team are a year away from Liverpool’s level - don’t be fooled, this is mind games and Chelsea have the quality especially in the likes of Eden Hazard to get the job done. Expect a tense close game and an enjoyable one.
