England Premier League
Tuesday 4th April 2023
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: Stamford Bridge
Match Preview:
This game will witness two great sides of the Premier League era who are usually challenging for league titles, however this isn’t the case this season and the challenge could well be to qualify for the Europa League.
Graham Potter has been sacked as Chelsea manager after just six months in the job. His win rate was just 38% at a club that expect 55% or higher. There will be lots of talk on Potter’s exit over the coming days but the Blues must regroup with interim manager Bruno Saltor in charge for now. Chelsea have dropped to 11th place following their 2-0 home defeat against Aston Villa but they did show some signs of turning a page with recent wins over Leeds and Leicester and let’s not forget they have reached the quarter finals of the Champions League. But the project at Chelsea was not to be in 11th place by April. Currently Chelsea are 5 points from any European qualification the bar at the moment is Brighton who have also played 2 games less than the Blues, and realistcially it feels as if Chelsea will not play in Europe next season that is a huge blow to a club who won the Champions League in 2021.
Liverpool, like their opponents have had a season to forget and they come into this game in 8th place and only four points ahead of the Blues. The Reds have lost 9 games this season and that includes their last two coming against Bournemouth and Manchester City. It was at the weekend that Liverpool were reminded how distant they are a rival to City now as they were thrashed 4-1 despite taking the lead in that game. Liverpool’s objective will always be the Champions League but they have fallen 8 points behind and there simply seems to be too many teams inbetween them to see Klopp’s team from appearing in the competition next season.
Team News:
Chelsea: Raheem Sterling is being tipped to return for this game following his hamstring injury. Wesley Fofana remains 50/50 to make this encounter and will be assessed. Thiago Silva is out for at least another 10 days due to a knee injury, Edouard Mendy could be selected for the squad after recovering from his hand injury. Cesar Azpilicueta misses out once more due to a head injury and he currently has no fixed return date.
Liverpool: Luiz Diaz has recovered from injury but has a lack of match fitness and will miss out here, he isn’t due back for another two weeks. Naby Keita may well miss the rest of the season with a new muscle injury. Thiago Alcantara is still out with his hip and not due back for 2 weeks.
Chelsea vs Liverpool Head to Head:
Chelsea haven’t beaten Liverpool for two years going back to six games.
The last 3 competitive games between the clubs has ended in the same score line of 0-0.
There is a 70% chance to see under 2.5 goals.
Chelsea vs Liverpool Prediction:
For a good 8 years Chelsea have been a side akin to a Ferrari when it’s driven properly it leaves the rest of the field for dust and when it’s not…. you get the picture. One suspects in the coming months and or years as players biographies are published that we are going to learn that the stars and dare we say it egos of Chelsea are not going to have good things to say about Graham Potter. Granted he did make tactical errors but not all the blame can be laid at his feet. You get the feeling that this Chelsea side demand a continental manager in line with the players thinking. In Saltor they have one, alas he has no experience but at the same time they won’t mind for now and we expect to see the team play really well at home, almost like a positive response to Potter being sacked, a reaction.
Liverpool have quality but still look like a side lost at sea and now they face another tough game away from home and we can’t see them getting much here. Chelsea are due a win over the Reds and this could be the perfect opportunity, the recent spate of 0-0 results look like being quashed here.
