England Premier League
Sunday 18th August 2019
Kick off at 4.30pm BST
Venue: Stamford Bridge
Match Preview:
Frank Lampard will be taking a big breathe and now he has to exhale, get back to the drawing board and assess the situation. On the surface things aren’t good because they lost 4-0 at Manchester United on the opening weekend of the season and then were defeated in the Super Cup against Liverpool. That game ended 2-2 however, went to penalties, and there were real signs of where Lampard wants to take this team, which certainly feels like a new era for the club.
In short there is no reason to panic, though they have conceded 6 goals in 2 games they have also faced quality teams. There would have been bitter disappointment on Wednesday evening and the match was in Istanbul, but unlike Liverpool who had to play on Saturday, Chelsea get an extra days rest and have home advantage where they are usually very strong.
Leicester drew 0-0 at home to Wolves and considering how good Wolves were last season this wasn’t a terrible result. Whilst the Foxes did create many chances there will be question marks over their performance that yielded just 1 shot on target in the entire game. This is still very early days though, and not much can be learned from just one game. What is for certain is that Brendan Rogers is a very good manager, he now has a very well balance Leicester side, and this will not be an easy game for Chelsea despite being at Stamford Bridge.
Team News:
Chelsea: Antonio Rudiger and Willian are expected to be in the squad after fitness issues. There are long term injuries to the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ruben Loftus Cheek
Leicester: Apart from Nampalys Mendy, Leicester have a full squad to pick from. Mendy received a knock in pre-season and is pencilled in to return for this match
Chelsea vs Leicester Head to Head:
Chelsea have not beaten Leicester since 2017.
The last time the teams played at Stamford Bridge Leicester won 1-0.
The last 3 meetings have all been under 1.5 goals.
Chelsea have not beaten Leicester at home since 2016.
Chelsea vs Leicester Prediction:
We will either see Chelsea come out of the starting blocks like a wounded animal and go on and win this game convincingly or we will see a team that aren’t quite sure of themselves and go up against a solid and experienced Leicester squad in a game that will have chances but soon fizzle out.
So a lot can happen in this match but what we need to remember is that this represents Lampard’s first real homecoming, and the fans absolutely love him as a legend for the club. At home, with thousands of loyal supporters and if we take the way Chelsea played against Liverpool into consideration then this could well point to a narrow home victory. We will take them on to do so.
