Chelsea vs Leeds: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 5th December 2020
Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: Stamford Bridge

Match Preview:

It’s been almost three months since Chelsea lost a game in any competition and they will come into this match super pumped and full of confidence after they went to Spain in midweek and thrashed Sevilla 4-0.

A Champions League fixture away to Sevilla is never easy and Chelsea were brilliant and it was a game to remember for Olivier Giroud who amazingly scored all 4 goals. Frank Lampard will be delighted with how his club has reacted in the last few months, the older and newer players, he will remain cautious but has to be happy where the club are at after spending millions in the summer.

Last weekend though could have been seen as two points dropped for the Blues, as they dominated most of the game at home against Tottenham and yet it finished 0-0. At the same time, they didn’t lose, kept a clean sheet and were up against the team in 1st place. At home Chelsea have gone unbeaten for their last four and a win would see them go top, at least until Sunday when Tottenham and Liverpool play their respective matches.

Leeds United impressed at Everton, which was always going to be a tricky tie for Marcelo Bielsa’s side but they came away from Goodison Park with all three points in a 1-0 win. The victory moved Leeds up to 12th and the club would enter the top 10 with a win at the weekend. Form has been inconistent for the club but they come into this match undefeated in their last two.

Leeds have won 60% of their away matches so far and while beating Everton was welcomed we have to remember that in their previous away match they were able to lose 4-1 against Crystal Palace, so backing Leeds in away games is never as guaranteed as some people may think.

Team News:

Chelsea: The Blues have no injury worries ahead of the game

Leeds: Diego Llorente is edging closer back to returning and could be selected though there is no update as of yet. Adam Forshaw is long term with a hip injury. Jack Harrison has a slight knock and will face a late test. Pablo Hernandez has been ruled out for the second game running due to his muscle injury and Jamie Shackleton is still out with the same problem.

Chelsea vs Leeds Head to Head:

The last time the clubs met at Stamford Bridge was in 2004 when Chelsea won 1-0.

The last meeting was back in 2012 in the League Cup at Elland Road which Chelsea won 5-1.

Based on the last 10 competitive meetings there is an 80% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

Chelsea vs Leeds Prediction:

Once we see these two clubs have not played a league meeting with each other since 2004 it becomes clear that patterns and history should be ditched and we should be concentrating on what both teams are bringing to the table now.

At times Chelsea in the last 18 months have looked fragile at home, not as strong as they used to be but it is perhaps true that Frank Lampard’s brilliant buys in the summer might be making the club as solid as ever.

Leeds are quick paced and will give Chelsea problems, they are a team full of confidence who just want to enjoy what they are doing. This is all good and it did work against Everton although Everton did have many shots on target. One can only presume that Chelsea could go into double figures and some of those chances are going to count. We expect to see an open game as Chelsea take even more risks than they did last weekend and will fancy their chances of winning this match.

Timo Werner has gone a little quiet and he may be worth keeping an eye on. Hakim Ziyech will also be a danger. It is unclear if man of the moment Giroud will start the game given his exploits and age in midweek, if he does his confidence is so high you could back him also to score.
