England Premier League
Tuesday 20th April 2021
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: Stamford Bridge
Match Preview:
It’s been an excellent week for Chelsea who remain on course to have a very special ending to their season campaign. The Blues reached the FA Cup final after beating Manchester City 1-0 and will play Leicester. But what a fantastic result for the club who ended City’s hopes of a special quadruple, and also kept a clean sheet against one of the best sides in Europe at the moment.
Following last week’s 4-1 win over Crystal Palace, Chelsea’s hopes of a top 4 finish in the league improved over the weekend and they didn’t even have to play a league game. West Ham in 4th place lost to Newcastle and so the Blues are only 1 point behind in 5th but with a game in hand.
Over the past 10 games Chelsea have won 21 points and lost just once under Thomas Tuchel in the league. They are arguably the most confident side in the league and will be odds on favourites to win this game on Tuesday evening. At home the Blues have won 10 points from their last 15.
Brighton are six points clear of the drop and have two games in hand over 18th placed Fulham. Graham Potter’s side are hardly out of danger but there is some breathing space and that was afforded by Arsenal who scored a 96th minute equaliser against Fulham to deny them three huge points.
Brighton have not played since April 12th when they drew 0-0 against Everton and their last away game ended in a close 2-1 loss to Manchester United. Indeed Brighton’s away form has been better than their home form, and in the last few months they have been able to beat Southampton and Liverpool on the road, and also draw against Burnley. They have won 5 games away from home from 15 games.
Team News:
Chelsea: Andreas Christensen is only 50/50 to return because of a muscle injury. Mateo Kovacic is also only 50/50 for this game due to his hamstring.
Brighton: Florin Andone has recovered from injury but has a lack of match fitness and will need to be assessed. Aaron Connolly will face a late test ahead of the game after his calf injury. Percy Tau will be assessed due to a lack of match fitness.
Chelsea vs Brighton Head to Head:
Last season Chelsea won this fixture 2-0.
Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture there was a 3-1 win for Chelsea.
Brighton last beat Chelsea in a friendly game in 2012, but if we look at competitive games then the last Brighton victory over the Blues came back in 1933 in an FA Cup game.
Chelsea vs Brighton Prediction:
The only advantage that Brighton have coming into this game is that Chelsea have played twice since they played. But the gulf in class and the players that can rotate in this Chelsea side means that is pretty much nullified.
The motivation for Chelsea is huge and they would go 4th with a win. Also if Liverpool have beaten Leeds then the Reds will be in front of Chelsea coming into this game- the bottom line is that this is a must win match for Chelsea. This is also an encounter that Chelsea can certainly win and given their form and history over Brighton we don’t see any other result. We also have to take into consideration that while Brighton would welcome anything from the game, they could live with a defeat given that Fulham were not able to win at the weekend.
Though Chelsea are odds on, the Blues are still worth backing, and we think this will be a hard worked but solid victory from the home side.
