Chelsea vs Brentford: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 2nd April 2022
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: Stamford Bridge

Match Preview:

Chelsea have been in the headlines, not for their football but because of their ownership fall out after Roman Abramovich had to sell the club. Presently the club are in a midst of a takeover and fans will be hoping that new billionaires will be able to take the club forward. Despite all of the behind the scenes stories it has to be said that the Blues have been flawless winning games in the Premier League and in the Champions League. They will start as the odds on favourites to win this game also.

Chelsea are in 3rd place and have little chance to challenge for the league as they are 11 points behind although do have a game in hand. It is more realistic that the Blues will claim 3rd place although that could be in jeopardy if they have a poor run in. Arsenal are only 5 points behind although it would take an implosion for the club not to finish in the top four. Recent form has been excellent with five wins out of five and their last game finished in a 1-0 victory over Newcastle.

Brentford have won 2 of their last three games to climb to 15th place and they have moved 8 points clear from the bottom three. A 2-1 defeat against Leicester ended a good two game winning run and recent victories against Norwich and Burnley have seen the Bees take huge steps to guarantee safety this season. To be clear they are not out of the woods just yet but should be fine with the gap now created.

Away from home Thomas Frank’s side have lost just over 50% of their games and recent away form isn’t good with 4 defeats from their last five. The club have only won 3 times on the road so far this season.

Team News:

Chelsea: Andreas Christensen is being tipped to return for this game but will be assessed first. Both Reece James (muscle) and Callum Hudson-Odoi (Achilles) will be assessed but there is no certainty either player will be ready for the game.

Brentford: There are no injuries for the Bees ahead of the game.

Chelsea vs Brentford Head to Head:

The clubs have played 16 games and Chelsea have 10 wins.

Because the clubs have not played many games through the years we would have to go back to 1939 since the last time Brentford won.

The last time the clubs played at Stamford Bridge was in 2017 in the FA Cup and the Blues won that game 4-0.

The latest game between the two sides was just four months ago when they met in the EFL Cup and Chelsea, playing away, won 2-0.

Chelsea vs Brentford Prediction:

This is a busy month for Chelsea, four days from this game they play Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter finals, there is the FA Cup semi-final game coming up too and one has to wonder where Chelsea will be prioritising their needs. No player will admit it but they will be thinking of their Champions League game and of course they are the holders.

At the same time Brentford are improving and can be a difficult side to play but their away form has been too poor and we think Chelsea can get all 3 points here. Thomas Tuchel will not want his side to give up 3rd place but we don’t expect to see many inspired games from the club in the league not when they have good chances in Europe and in the FA Cup. Because of this one good choice to make could be the lack of goals at the weekend and we will be backing that market.

It might be beneficial to pick a player that doesn’t score so regularly for Chelsea because the main guys will either not play or will not be 100% focused on this but all in all Chelsea should have enough to come through this test with being at home.
