Burnley vs West Ham: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 12th December 2021
Kick off at 2pm GMT
Venue: Turf Moor

Match Preview:

Draws are just about keeping Burnley above water as they have recorded seven so far but Sean Dyche’s team are still in 18th place and three points from safety. A recent 4 game unbeaten streak came to an end last weekend as they were beaten 1-0 by Newcastle and that was the Magpies first win of the season.

On form Burnley would be in 10th place but the loss to Newcastle, struggling themselves, may have affected confidence coming into this match. From a possible 18 points at home Burnley have managed to win six and that is only good enough to have the 2nd to worst record in the league. Their last three games at home have been positive though with no defeats and those have included draws against Norwich and Crystal Palace and victory over Brentford.

West Ham are in 4th place with 27 points but a gap to 3rd has already appeared which is at six points to Chelsea. But last week the Hammers were superb in coming back from 2-1 down to beat the Blues 3-2. The Hammers have not lost for their last two games but have struggled on the road lately with two defeats in a row.

One of them was against Manchester City which wouldn’t have affected them but the other one was against Wolves and they would have been disappointed with that result. If the Hammers drop points at the weekend they could see Tottenham go past them so that consistency needs to be kept up especially in the wake of manager David Moyes claiming that the clubs objective is to qualify for the Champions League.

Team News:

Burnley: Phillip Bardsley has a muscle injury and is a doubt to be ready for this game. Maxwell Cornet has a thigh injury and will be assessed. Ben Mee is being pencilled in to return for this game after his shoulder injury. Dale Stephens will probably not be risked in this game after just recovering from Covid-19.

West Ham: Aaron Cresswell is being tipped to return from his back injury and has been involved in training. Ben Johnson is a major doubt with his hamstring. Kurt Zouma is also very doubtful with his hamstring. Angelo Ogbonna is out long term with his knee injury.

Burnley vs West Ham Prediction:

This should be a hard fought victory for West Ham and that shows just how far the club have come because Burnley are the sort of team for the Hammers that could be a banana skin. But we have seen apart from the odd blip a completely new attitude and level from the club. The Hammers have been more aggressive in their play and are not afraid to come forward and take some risks, it is difficult to recall a West Ham team of the past 30 years who have been so consistency like this.

Burnley have simply been average to poor this season but this remains a big game for the Hammers even if they are the favourites to win this one. They have been solid on the road though overall and we won’t be looking past them to get the victory. Michail Antonio loved last season against Burnley and scored a brace against them the last time the teams played each other, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if he was able to score again at the weekend.
