England Premier League
Thursday 25th June 2020
Kick off at 6pm BST
Venue: Turf Moor
Match Preview:
Maybe it’s a good thing for Burnley that they are playing on Thursday after their last game was on Monday. Then they were destroyed 5-0 against Manchester City and this game against Watford gives Sean Dyche’s team the chance to put that defeat behind them.
Burnley are 11th with 39 points and they should be safe this season but they would like to confirm that with another 3 points, and this should be their goal when they welcome Watford to their home. However the club have gone 3 games now without a win, despite the break however you would have to go back to New Years Day since the last time they lost a game at home.
Watford drew 1-1 with Leicester on their return to football, and that would have been a good result for the club given that Leicester are 3rd. Also the Hornets looked set to lose that game having lost the lead in the 90th minute but were able to equalise deep into injury time through an excellent Craig Dawson goal.
The Hornets are in 16th and the bad news is that the club directly above them, Brighton, have moved 4 points clear. The good news and it is only slight is that they moved a point clear of West Ham and Bournemouth. The reality though is that they are just a point from the bottom three and need to push on.
Team News:
Burnley: Ashley Barnes has missed all of the opening games so far and it looks like he will be ruled out of this match too because of his groin. Chris Wood has an achilles problem but he is back training
Watford: Isaac Success has an achilles injury no update has been given, but he could well miss this game
Burnley vs Watford Head to Head:
Burnley beat Watford 3-0 in the reverse fixture earlier in the season.
Watford have just one victory from the past five meetings.
Last season Watford won this game 3-1.
Burnley vs Watford Prediction:
This game has all the elements to be a close one. It is interesting that Burnley swept aside Watford 3-0 earlier in the season, with two goals coming from Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood- two players who will almost certainly not be available to play here. Also how will Burnley react from their 5-0 drubbling at the hands of Manchester City? Will it simply be a result they could have expected or will it have a negative effect on some players?
Watford need this win more than Burnley and some of the clubs play did look encouraging against Leicester but this is a game that really could go either way.
