Venue: Turf Moor
Match Preview:
So how will Tottenham follow up their stunning win over the champions and Premier League leaders Manchester City? One would expect playing a bottom three side after scoring 3 goals past City would be easy enough to predict another win for Tottenham. But this is the Premier League and this is Tottenham.
There is a word often used by opposing fans about Tottenham, that they do things in a ‘spursy’ way. Basically this means they are a club capable of beating the best in the world and playing some great football one week and a club who can replicate a pub side the next. In truth Tottenham have been a solid outfit albeit without trophies for a few years now but not everyone will be rushing to rule out Burnley getting something from this midweek game.
Burnley themselves need the victory as they come into this game in 19th place and 5 points from safety. Sean Dyche’s team pulled off their greatest result of the season last weekend as they beat Brighton 3-0 away from home. It was only the clubs 2nd victory of the season and given how impressive Brighton have been that was quite a result. Burnley reduced Brighton’s chances to just 1 shot on target and now have 17 points. That was a recovery result though and they still need significant results in order to move them up the table. A win here would take the club above Watford and into 18th place and they would only be 2 points behind Newcastle and have a game in hand.
What has been interesting is that one would expect Burnley to have a dreadful home and away record and while their home form is nothing to get excited about the majority of their games here have ended in draws. Currently they have drawn 60% of their games at home and lost just 3 times. As an example Manchester United, Tottenham and West Ham have lost more games at home this season.
Tottenham have a good record over Manchester City and once they took the lead at the Etihad there just seemed like there would be something in the air- and there was. City were the better team, had the possession and chances but Tottenham took their chances better and it was ironic that Harry Kane scored two goals to beat City. Of course City made Kane their number 1 target last summer but failed to capture him. And what of the cost? The league title has opened up again and alongside Antonio Conte’s wild celebrations Jurgen Klopp wouldn’t have been far behind in his home.
The win over City was important for Tottenham as it ended an unwanted 3 game losing streak. It felt as if the club were imploding for 4th place just at the wrong time but this win has put Tottenham back in the mix again. They are seven points behind 4th placed Manchester United but have 3 games in hand, that is why this is a must win game for Conte’s team.
Away form isn’t the best but recent away form has been solid with 3 wins from their last four and apart from their recent loss at Chelsea it’s been over 3 months since they last lost on the road.
Team News:
Burnley: Gundmundsson looked all set to return but a scan on his calf has revealed a worse injury than thought so he will miss this game for sure. James Tarowski is ill and is a doubt, Charlie Taylor is expected to miss this game with his on going foot injury but is being tipped to return at the weekend. Matej Vydra is out with his hernia.
Tottenham: Emerson Royal has a knock and will be assessed although it isn’t thought to be serious. Sergio Reguilon is ill and remains a major doubt. Oliver Skipp looks like missing out once again with his groin and Japhet Tanganga is missing with a knee injury.
Burnley vs Tottenham Head to Head:
The clubs last met here in the EFL Cup earlier in the season and Tottenham won 1-0.
Tottenham have won the last 3 meetings in a row.
From the last 15 meetings Burnley have won just once.
There is a 60% chance to see under 2.5 goals.
Burnley vs Tottenham Prediction:
This is when we see if Antonio Conte’s Tottenham team has backbone. We know that the club are strong and have been improving over the past five years but they have mostly still been that side that takes one step forward then one step back. Beating Manchester City will mean nothing if they lose this game except a brilliant moment from their season. But the club need to use the City victory as a stepping stone for consistency to try and finish the season in 4th place.
Burnley are not to be taken lightly. Normally teams that are in 18th place by February can be cannon fodder for clubs that have top 4 aspirations but there is something wonderfully unique about Sean Dyche’s team. The bottom line is that even though they have been poor at times, they don’t concede many goals as their position would suggest and they are a club who know how to raise their game against the top sides.
The home side could get something from this game and that says a lot about the team and how hard they work and how they can upset the flow of technically better teams that face them. To try and make this selection as safe as possible, our handicap will even cover a 1 goal defeat on the refund. Harry Kane looked back on fire for Tottenham and he is a decent price to score during 90 minutes.
