Burnley vs Southampton: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 26th September 2020
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: Turf Moor

Match Preview:

Burnley have played only 1 league game so far this season and whilst it was an entertaining one they lost the game in question against Leicester 4-2.

This match then is about bouncing back from that and getting on track. Sean Dyche will be happy that his club will be at home and that they are not playing against a top 6 side. Burnley did have some good news in midweek when they went to Millwall and knocked out the Lions from the Carabao Cup. The 2-0 result may have flattered them slightly but the win would have been the perfect tonic to set them up for this game.

Southampton have a lot of work to do, the Saints come into this game in 19th place after losing both of their games so far. Losing to Crystal Palace away from home wasn’t a disaster and even losing against Tottenham wouldn’t have been, but the Saints quickly collapsed against Jose Mourinho’s team finally succumbing 5-2. The one bright bit of good news is that Danny Ings looks as good as ever and scored a brace against Spurs.

Team News:

Burnley: Robert Brady has a rib injury but it is thought to be minor and he could be assessed. Gundmundsson is still missing with his knee injury, Ben Mee is more long term with a thigh injury. Jay Rodriguez has a small chance to recover in time for this game after his ankle injury. James Tarkowski is only 50/50 to make this game after an ongoing toe injury.

Southampton: Nathan Redmond has picked up an ankle injury in the Carabao Cup. He hasn’t been ruled out of this game officially but it looks like he will miss out.

Burnley vs Southampton Head to Head:

Last season Burnley won this fixture 3-0.

Southampton have not beaten Burnley since 2016 going back 8 games.

Southampton have not won away at Burnley since 2007.

There is a 70% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

Burnley vs Southampton Prediction:

Southampton have got more games under their belt but they will feel the more nervous of the two teams, no one wants to lose 3 games in a row. Burnley have a great record over Southampton and even better at home, simply put the Saints don’t travel well.

However these teams are more equal than meets the eye, and we should see a good game with maybe a few goals. So whilst we will back the home side to take something from this game, we will also follow Danny Ings to score during the game for Southampton, he has a taste of goal and will do everything he can to help his club.
