England Premier League
Friday 11th August 2023
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: Turf Moor
Match Preview:
The new Premier League season will kick off on Friday evening as the champions Manchester City will take on newly promoted side Burnley. The fixtures are chosen randomly by a computer although some believe that the coincidences it throws up may have some human involvement. Take this game where Burnley are managed by Vincent Kompany- former Manchester City great whose first Premier League game in a managerial role is against his former club.
Burnley have experience in the top flight of course but any promoted club will be amongst the favourites for the drop at the beginning of the season and of course Burnley will be the big underdogs here. The Clarets have been splashing the cash and have spent almost £60m already. Stand out purchases include Jordan Beyer from Borissia Moechengladbach, Zeki Amdouni from Basel for £16m and the goalkeeper James Trafford from Manchester City.
Manchester City have won the Premier League for the last 3 years and they will be attempting to create a new record in the English top flight and win it for a 4th time. City are fresh from losing the Community Shield to Arsenal on penalties after the game finished 1-1. While it is not a priority trophy to win, the club were upset by the defeat. They enter everything to win under manager Pep Guardiola’s influence but at the same time it could be a good omen for the season ahead with City also losing the last two Community Shields - they went on to win the league title.
City have spent £100m so far in bolstering their squad but this includes spending £77.5m on defender Josko Gvardiol who is rated as one of the best young defenders in world football. Mateo Kovacic has also come in from Chelsea for £25m. City have let Ilkay Gundogan go to Barcelona on a free and have departed ways with Riyad Mahrez who joined Saudi club Al-Ahli for £30m. In pre-season City played two high profile friendlies, beating Bayern Munich 2-1 and losing by the same scoreline against Atletico Madrid both games took place in Asia.
Team News:
Burnley: The club have minimal injury worries at present and only Michael Obafemi is out with a hamstring injury.
Manchester City: Nathan Ake has a knock and will be assessed. The rest of the squad are fully fit for now.
Burnley vs Man City Head to Head:
The teams last met earlier this year in March in the FA Cup where Manchester City at home won 6-0.
In 2022 Manchester City beat Burnley 2-0 away from home.
Manchester City have won the last 11 meetings in a row.
Burnley have not beaten Manchester City in 8 years.
Burnley vs Man City Prediction:
Manchester City will be expected to beat Burnley of course and if they do, no one will be surprised. But we should give Burnley some credit and benefit of the doubt. They are newly promoted, at home and this is an evening game and of course their first fixture. The atmosphere will be electric in the ground and will be hostile to City. City will have to get going straight off the bat and use all of their professionalism to grind out a win. City are huge odds on and can’t be backed but we can increase those odds at no extra risk with a "-1 asian handicap".
This is a fixture that has seen just one of the last 5 league games at Burnley end in over 2.5 goals and this match may well be tighter than most are expecting.
Burnley vs Man City Betting Tips:
Asian handicap (-1 Man City) at 1.53
Half Time Result: Draw at 2.50
Anytime goalscorer: Julian Alvarez at 2.28
