England Premier League
Friday 12th January 2024
Kick off at 7:45pm GMT
Venue: Turf Moor
Match Preview:
This game kicks off a cut down version of Premier League football this weekend with just five games being played. But this game has all of the potential to be quite an intense affair given that these two clubs are in the bottom three.
Burnley are in 19th place with 11 points and are four points behind their visitors. Vincent Kompany’s side have lost 15 of their 20 games so far and have lost their last two in a row coming into this one. They have had to face Liverpool and Aston Villa in those games though so recent fixtures have not been easy. Indeed Burnley came close to surprising Villa and only lost out 3-2 in that away game. While the club have shown some positive signs in the last month there is no disguising how poor their season has been so far and if Luton and Everton were to win their next games for the first time this season there would be a realisation that the Clarets are in deep trouble. In midweek Burnley were knocked out of the FA Cup as they lost 1-0 away to Tottenham.
Luton’s form has picked up to the extent that if they were to win here they would leave the bottom three and dump Everton in there for at least a day. Luton are just one point behind 17th placed Everton. The Hatters have won 2 of their last 3 games after beating Newcastle and Sheffield United. Even in their last league game they came close to upsetting Chelsea who had found themselves three goals up but Luton fought back to 2-3 but just missed out. In their FA Cup game they could only draw 0-0 at home to Bolton and so the two teams will face off again in a replay. Away from home it’s 6 defeats from nine but the Hatters did win their last away game which came against Sheffield United.
Team News:
Burnley: Jordan Beyer and Lyle Foster may be assessed with their respective knock and foot injuries. Charlie Taylor is more of a doubt after a recent shoulder injury but the extent of the injury is not known. Hjalmar Ekdal remains out with a knock with no fixed return date.
Luton: Reece Burke and Daniel Potts who both have hamstring injuries will be assessed ahead of the game. Issa Kabore is on international duty, Marvelous Nakamba remains out with a knee injury and Tom Lockyer is out long term with illness.
Burnley vs Luton Head to Head:
In the reverse fixture earlier in the season Burnley won 2-1.
Last season in the Championship the fixture finished 1-1.
Luton has failed to win for the past seven meetings.
5 of the last six meetings have seen under 2.5 goals.
Burnley vs Luton Prediction:
This is a big six pointer and Burnley really need to have to win this game. In a worse case scenario they could exit this weekend and be 7 points from safety if they lose here. Burnley has a good record against Luton, a side who have not managed to beat the Clarets since 2000. Games have been close though and we expect this one to be the same.
The good news for the neutral is that both sides have found better quality in their play recently and we expect this game to have a cup feel to it, the home side really have to go for it. At the same time Luton has the huge motivation to move out of the bottom three and this should be a typically classic Friday evening clash in the top flight of English football, and we think Burnley could snatch it.
