England Premier League
Tuesday 1st March 2022
Kick off at 7:45pm GMT
Venue: Turf Moor
Match Preview:
The only midweek Premier League game will take place between Burnley and Leicester and what a moment this could be for the home side!
If Burnley who have been in good form win this game they would climb out of the relegation zone and move up to 15th place. In turn Everton who have not been relegated from the top flight in 70 years would move into the bottom three so there will be a lot of focus on this game, no doubt.
Burnley have lost just one game in their past five and have shown enough quality for one to wonder what the club are exactly doing in the bottom three? The answer is that they have drawn too many games, 12 so far although their latest draw at the weekend would have felt like a minor victory. The reason is that Sean Dyche’s team found themselves a goal down away to Crystal Palace- always a tricky opponent but fought their way back into the game to level up, even though it was an own goal in the end they shored up the defence in the second half and limited Palace to just one shot on target. That has been the nature of this Burnley side, defence, and for a club in the bottom three they have been impressive to have conceded just 30 goals. The other two teams in relegation trouble have conceded 47 and 55 respectively.
Leicester didn’t play at the weekend as they were due to face off against Chelsea but of course the Blues were taking part in the Carabao Cup final. So the Foxes have been able to rest but have lost out in position because of results and are now in 13th place. Form has been worrying for Brendan Rodgers side and in the league they haven’t won a game this year. Though they have 3 games in hand over some rivals ahead of them European football looks over for next season unless they win the Europa League, and all in all it has been a disappointing season for the club. The Foxes last result ended in a 2-1 defeat against Wolves.
Away from home Leicester have been very poor and in fact have the third worst record in the Premier League having won just 9 points from a possible 33. This includes losing their last 4 games in a row.
Team News:
Burnley: Gundmundsson is out long term with a calf injury, Erik Pieters picked up a knock at the weekend though it is thought not to be too serious and he has a chance for this game. Matej Vydra is still out with a hernia.
Leicester: Jamie Vardy has recovered from injury but has some fitness issues and is only 50/50 to return. It is the same case for Wesley Fofana and he is likely to return in two weeks as an act of precaution. Justin James is only 50/50 to make this game after his recent muscle injury. Jonny Evans is out for another three weeks with a hamstring, Timothy Castagne has a thigh injury which looks likely to keep him out for 3 weeks and Ryan Bertrand is out long term with his knee.
Burnley vs Leicester Head to Head:
Last season this fixture finished 1-1.
Earlier this season in the reverse fixture there were 4 goals in a contest that finished 2-2.
For the last six meetings in a row both teams have scored.
Burnley vs Leicester Prediction:
We are going to back Burnley for the win but cover the draw for more security. The club are in good form and this is a huge opportunity for them to finally move out of the bottom three. This is such an important game for the club because they could dump Everton into the bottom three but at the same time this match is not a game in hand over Everton and it would mean they have played a game more, so a win is a must really for the club.
Leicester have not been good in 2022 but actually have been fairly average over the season. Of course some key injuries do not help and the list is slightly growing. The Foxes might be able to recall Jamie Vardy back to their forward line but he will have to be assessed and one has to wonder how rusty he will be after missing the last 2 months. Given also that Burnley are at home they just seem to be completely focused and we can’t see them losing this encounter.
